Top Gun Cast: Where Are They Now?

Top Gun Maverick Tom Cruise

It has been over 30 years since Tom Cruise revved up his engine and took the highway to the Danger Zone in Top Gun. After many years of development, and a significant delay due to the death of director Tony Scott, the sequel Top Gun: Maverick will hit theaters in 2020 with Cruise returning to his iconic role as Maverick.

However, after 30 years, the cast of the first movie has all gone their separate ways, moving on to new projects, and only Val Kilmer will return to join Cruise as a holdover from that first film. With that said, the original Top Gun had a great cast, and here is a look at where these great actors are now.

Top Gun Maverick Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is the easiest place to start. He was the star of Top Gun and one of the most marketable stars of the '80s. Now, over 30 years later, he is still one of Hollywood's top stars. In 2018, he rose Mission: Impossible - Fallout to an impressive $791 million worldwide box office with great critical reviews as well.

However, Cruise has also enjoyed his fair share of misfires recently. He tried to help revive the Universal Monsters genre in 2017 with The Mummy, and while it made $409 million worldwide, its $80 million domestic take made it a huge disappointment. Regardless, in the right vehicle, Cruise is still a star.

Tom Cruise and Kelly Mcgillis in Top Gun

Kelly McGillis played the love interest for Maverick in Top Gun, the civilian instructor Charlie Blackwood. While the two reunited at the end of the movie as Maverick returned to become an instructor himself, they did not remain together. That is because Top Gun: Maverick has a new love interest in Jennifer Connelly, a single-mother and bar owner.

Top Gun immediately followed her award-nominated role in Witness. However, her career in Hollywood slowed as she took more of an active role in the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.  She hasn't appeared in much in recent years, with a one-episode role in Z Nation as her last major appearance.

Val Kilmer as Iceman and Tom Cruise Maverick in Top Gun

While Tom Cruise was the only person set to return in Top Gun: Maverick, one other star from the original movie wanted in as well. Val Kilmer went on social media and pitched his return to the franchise, and they listened. This action is surprising, as Kilmer doesn't appear too much in Hollywood movies anymore.

So what has Kilmer, who will return to his role as Iceman, been up to? After critically acclaimed performances in The Doors and Heat, Kilmer went almost to a straight-to-video career with his best effort of the last 20 years coming in Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Then and Now - Anthony Edwards from Top Gun

Anthony Edwards was Goose, the partner and close friend of Cruise's Maverick. While his character died in the first movie, his spirit plays a role in Top Gun: Maverick as it is his son Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, who is the new pilot trainee (portrayed by Miles Teller).

Edwards followed up Top Gun with some comedy roles (Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise) and a terrible horror sequel in Pet Sematary Two. However, in 1994, he hit it big when he picked up the roles of Dr. Mark Greene in ER. He is currently in a recurring role on Designated Survivor.

Then and Now - Tom Skerritt in Top Gun

In Top Gun, Tom Sherritt portrayed CDR Mike "Viper" Metcalf, their chief instructor and a man who served with Maverick's father and was there when he died in action. Long before he appeared on Top Gun, Sherritt was a huge name, starring in the military comedy MASH as well as the Ridley Scott horror classic Alien.

Skerritt is now 86-years-old, and his last role was in a 2017 movie called Lucky. Before that, he was taking small parts in several television shows, including The Good Wife and Leverage.

Then and Now - Michael Ironside in Top Gun

In Top Gun, Michael Ironside portrayed LCDR Rick "Jester" Heatherly, one of the instructors who, along with Viper, trained Maverick, Goose, Iceman, and the rest. He remains with the program years later to train the next generation of pilots.

Ironside has had a fantastic career in film and television, starring in everything from Scanners and Total Recall to Starship Troopers to Terminator: Salvation. He most recently appeared in episodes of the hit TV shows This is Us and Hawaii Five-0.

Then and Now - John Stockwell in Top Gun

John Stockwell had a small but crucial role in Top Gun. He starred as Cougar at the start of the movie when he ends up with a hostile aircraft on his tail, needing Maverick to save him. This moment caused Cougar to give up his wings, saying that he has a newborn and can't go on. This move allowed Maverick to head to Topgun.

After Top Gun, Stockwell worked as a screenwriter, penning the Mark Wahlberg movie script Rock Star, and ended up becoming a director and helmed movies like Kickboxer: Vengeance and the critically acclaimed film Crazy/Beautiful.

Then and Now - Tim Robbins in Top Gun

Tim Robbins is one of the top names outside Tom Cruise when it comes to Top Gun actor's future roles. In the movie, Merlin is Cougar's (John Stockwell) former RIO (the officer responsible for manning the weapons systems). He went on to become a massive Hollywood success.

Following Top Gun, Robbins turned heads with roles in Bull Durham, Bob Roberts (which he also directed), Shawshank Redemption, and Mystic River, winning an Oscar for that final role. Most recently, Robbins went to television with parts on Here and Now and this year's Castle Rock season 2.

Then and Now - Meg Ryan in Top Gun

When Top Gun came out, Meg Ryan was just getting started. In Top Gun, she played a tragic role. Ryan played the wife of Goose, who died in the turning point of the film. This relationship also means that she is the mother of Miles Teller's character Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick, although Ryan is not listed in the cast.

Following Top Gun, Ryan slowly replaced Julia Roberts as the queen of romcoms. She took on roles in When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle and was one of Hollywood's top female leads. Ryan hasn't been in a movie since 2016's Ithaca, which she also directed.

Adrian Pasdar has a small role in the Top Gun cast because Tony Scott liked his performance when trying out for the movie, so he created the part of Chipper Piper just for him. This casting was huge since it was Pasdar's first movie role.

Adrian Pasdar went on to a career with several genre movies, including the vampire movie Near Dark and gangster movie Carlito's Way. Pasdar also picked up a long-running voice actor role as Tony Stark in the Marvel animated movies. Most recently, he took on live-action superhero roles, first as villain Graviton in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and then as Morgan Edge in Supergirl.
