Val Kilmer is back as Iceman for Top Gun: Maverick. Paramount is finally moving on the long in-development sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 hit Top Gun. The sequel is unsurprisingly bringing back Tom Cruise and his character, Maverick, will be an ever bigger focus of the sequel. When fans of the original meet up with the daring pilot once again, it'll be in a very different role as he's now transitioned into being a mentor to the new hot shots.

Ever since the sequel was announced, no one has been quite as ready to jump back into their Top Gun role as Val Kilmer. He played Iceman in the first film and was often the foil to Maverick, until the two were forced to work together to have a successful mission. Kilmer hasn't been shy about wanting to return and it looks like he'll get his wish.

The Wrap broke the news that Val Kilmer is indeed going to appear in Top Gun: Maverick. What role Tom “Iceman” Kazansky will play in the sequel is not yet clear. But, he appears to already have begun working on the sequel as The Wrap says he was spotted near the film's San Diego set.

Val Kilmer in Top gun as Iceman

One of the most successful elements to Top Gun was the bromance between Maverick and Goose, an aspect that will obviously be missing from the sequel. With Kilmer returning, though, it will be interesting to see if Iceman and Maverick have remained rivals all these years later or if their kinship has grown, making this friendship the new centerpiece. Whatever their dynamic is now, maybe they'll be on the same team this time for another beach volleyball scene.

The addition of Kilmer finally gives Cruise a co-star, as he was previously the lone confirmed actor for the sequel. Character breakdowns previously teased Goose's son, a new love interest for Maverick, and more. There's clearly plenty of other roles left to fill, so hopefully it won't be too much longer before those details surface. After all, director Joseph Kosinski and crew are already working on the film, so they must have more than two cast members to do so, right? Regardless of why more casting news has yet to be announced, Kilmer's return is one that will surely excite fans until they learn who else is going to be taking part in the sequel.
