Miles Teller has reportedly been cast as Goose's son in Top Gun: Maverick. After reports of Tom Cruise screen testing with actors like Teller, Glen Powell, and Nicholas Hoult, Teller ultimately came out on top.

In the original Top Gun from director Tony Scott, Cruise stars as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he trains in the US Navy's Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School. During the course of his training, he falls in love with a Top Gun instructor played by Kelly McGillis, earns a reputation for being reckless in the air, and maintains a strong friendship with fellow Naval Aviator and co-pilot Goose (Anthony Edwards). However, by the end of the movie, Goose dies after being improperly jettisoned from his aircraft. Now, over 30 years later, the sequel will revisit Maverick as he mentors a brand new generation of US Navy fighter pilots - one of whom may or may not be Goose's own son. And now that filming is underway on the sequel from director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion), it's been reported that Teller will play the role of Goose's son.

According to Varietysources claim that Teller has been officially offered the role for Top Gun's sequel, though there have not been any official details regarding the character aside from the obvious familial ties. The sequel will explore the end of an era in dogfighting, centered around modern drone technology and fifth generation fighters in the US Navy.

Though Cruise and Teller have never before worked together, both actors have worked with Kosinski. Cruise starred in the 2013 sci-fi thriller Oblivion based on Kosinski's unpublished graphic novel, while Teller recently starred in 2017's Yarnell, Arizona wildfire drama Only the Brave. The movie was based on the true story of the "Granite Mountain Hotshots," a team of selfless firefighters who were tasked with protecting their town from a massive wildfire in 2013. Both actors will also star alongside Val Kilmer in the Top Gun sequel, who is reprising his role as Lieutenant Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.

Though Teller has only been working as a professional actor for just over a decade, his filmography is stacked with standout performances alongside equally standout co-stars and directors. His breakout role was in Academy Award winning director Damien Chazelle's debut feature film Whiplash, he found mainstream acclaim alongside Shailene Woodley in the Divergent series, and he was critically lauded for his transformative performance in the boxing biopic Bleed for This based on former world boxing champion Vinny Pazienza.
