When Will The Top Gun: Maverick Trailer Release?

Tom Cruise as Maverick in Top Gun 2

When will the Top Gun: Maverick trailer release? Filming has wrapped on the star-studded Top Gun sequel, and fans now want to see the goods.

Maverick is the long-awaited sequel to 1986's Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Kelly McGillis. The film earned nearly $180 million domestically and $177 million outside the U.S. Add in the fact this film has become integral to the pop culture zeitgeist and was a career-making film for Cruise, and it's not difficult to see why this sequel has finally gone full steam ahead.

That brings us to the topic of the Top Gun 2 trailer. It was initially reported that Paramount would be bringing Top Gun: Maverick to SDCC 2019, although it doesn't appear anywhere on the official Comic-Con schedule (the only movie from the studio is Terminator: Dark Fate). It's still possible there'll be a surprise trailer - it would make a lot of sense for one of the biggest films arriving summer 2020 to begin promoting the film now with a teaser - although odds shrink by the day. If there isn't anything at SDCC, then it's more likely that the Top Gun 2 trailer will release in late 2019: that's the standard six-month marketing lead-in and would allow it to play before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Top Gun follows Maverick (Cruise), a hotshot Navy pilot in the Top Gun program. Maverick wants nothing more than to get up in the skies and prove he's every bit the great pilot he believes himself to be. But he soon learns during training that being a pilot comes with highs and lows even he couldn't have prepared for. Although plot specifics haven't been confirmed yet, Maverick could follow in a similar arc as we are taken through the Top Gun program in 2019 with new recruit Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's best friend Goose (Anthony Edwards).

So far, only a teaser image of Cruise has been released to mark the start of filming in 2018, while CinemaCon 2019 saw Paramount play very well-received footage. With no footage officially released to show fans, the need for a trailer very nearly trumps Maverick's well-known need for speed. Hopefully, Top Gun fans won't have to wait too much longer.
