In the latest teaser from Top Gun: Maverick, Goose's son doesn't trust Tom Cruise's Maverick because of what happened to his late father. The 34-year wait is almost over as Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun, is set to hit theaters this June. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Only the Brave), Top Gun: Maverick revolves around Cruise's LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who after 30 years of service, serves as a test pilot for the Navy while training new recruits at Top Gun.
After two spectacular trailers, anticipation is quickly building for Top Gun: Maverick. The footage emphasizes breathtaking flight sequences and death-defying stunts, with many of those scenes belonging to Cruise in the cockpit of a fighter jet. Cruise, who usually does his own stunts, convinced many of his costars to ride in the jets in order to film their facial expressions while moving at high speeds, giving Top Gun: Maverick a sense of authenticity. However, Maverick's battles are not limited to those in the air. Maverick continues to wrestle with the death of his best friend, Goose (Anthony Edwards), and that inner conflict will only grow thanks to the arrival of Goose's son, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller).
In the Super Bowl TV spot for Top Gun: Maverick, the focus remains on the high-flying aerial stunts, but it's the voiceover from Rooster that teases an immediate conflict with Maverick. Rooster says, "My dad believed in you. I'm not going to make the same mistake." There is a clear lack of trust between Rooster and Maverick because of what happened between Goose and Maverick in Top Gun. Goose was Maverick's Radar Intercept Officer and wingman in flight school. However, a costly move from Maverick led to Goose's death, which negatively affects Rooster's relationship with his instructor.
In Top Gun, Maverick and Goose chase an A-4 as they work on a training engagement with their rivals, Iceman (Val Kilmer) and Slider (Rick Rossovich). Maverick pushes his fighter jet to the limit but flies directly into Iceman's jet wash, which causes a flameout of both engines and a need for immediate ejection as it goes into a flat spin. Maverick successfully ejects from the aircraft, but Goose hits the aircraft canopy head-first before ejection, killing him instantly. Goose trusted Maverick with his life and, unfortunately, Maverick didn't hold up his end of the bargain. It's understandable as to why Rooster doesn't trust Maverick, considering Maverick's aggressive maneuvers led to Goose's tragic ending.
Based on the footage, Maverick's relationship with Rooster will play a major role in Top Gun: Maverick. The growing animosity between the two will likely boil over in the air at some point. Although Maverick was cleared of responsibility for Goose's death, he has lived with the guilt of losing his best friend throughout most of his life and will now have to deal with the consequences of his actions in the form of training Goose's son, Rooster.
