Since 2006, Top Chef has been inspiring and entertaining culinary enthusiasts. The many seasons of Top Chef are attributed to various reasons but one of them must be the charm and brilliance of Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi or formally known as Padma Parvati Lakshmi Vaidynathan.

Her phenomenal career includes a best-selling book, Easy Exotic, 9 Emmy nominations and awards, and currently serving as the host, creator, and executive producer of the renowned Hulu show Taste the Nation. Padma has defined her career with her incredible work ethic and projects but she also has some cool, inspiring facts that continue to make her a fan favorite.

Speaks 5 Different Languages

Many run across people who speak two languages but Lakshmi happily speaks five languages fluently due to her multicultural life. Especially with her traveling the world and introducing chefs from different paths, speaking many languages is great while discovering and displaying foods from different parts of the world.

The languages she speaks are English, Hindi, Tamil, Spanish and Italian. Like her mother, Lakshmi's daughter has also learned a couple of languages just like her mom.

Drinks 12 Cups of Tea

Top Chef is a riveting reality television series that keeps Lakshmi busy. Having tea keeps Lakshmi balanced to handle her schedule. She has given the example of drinking her favorite, masala chai or Hediard black tea. At times, Lakshmi has even discussed how she has 45 cups of tea as self-care.

The event alongside individuals who will be receiving college scholarships from top media companies. This year's life-changing event for many aspiring professionals will be hosted by a woman who is a role model for many underrepresented women aiming to enter Hollywood, Lakshmi.

Raised Fund For Recent Acid Attack Survivor Nafiah

Lakshmi used her platform to provide awareness for societal issues that happen around the globe to her 1.1 million followers. Similarly, Lakshmi used her platform when 21-year-old, Pakistani American Nafiah Ikram was thrown acid on her face and upper body in New York. The pre-med student survived the attack but Lakshmi still chose to use her platform to raise money for her medical bills and discuss hate crimes. The awareness leads to Nafriah receiving $519,000.

American Literature and Theatre Degree

Before her days watching chefs complete culinary challenges, Lakshmi was in university receiving her education to pursue a career in acting. She studied at Clark University with a degree in Theatre Arts and American Literature.

This college experience leads to her eventually being discovered for modeling while at a cafe in Spain, which were building blocks to her entering the industry.

Started Her Career With An Alias Name

When coming to America, Lakshmi used an alias to be accepted into American society. This fear and goal to succeed in America led to her changing her name to "Angelique." Over time, she decided to revert to her name Padma Lakshmi similar to her full name Padma Parvati Lakshmi Vaidynathan for all her future professional endeavors.

Founder of  The Endometriosis Foundation of America

Lakshmi has had endometriosis for years, but it was misdiagnosed or overlooked by some medical professionals and own family members due to a lack of awareness about endometriosis. After years of turmoil emotionally and physically with endometriosis for years, Lakshmi wanted to make sure no female goes through the same journey for an endometriosis diagnosis. She has started  EndoFound or The Endometriosis Foundation of America that aims to provide awareness for early stages and detection for endometriosis, encourage more research, and change public policy around the discussion of endometriosis in medical school. In fact, her organization has launched America’s first research center on gynepathology at MIT. Lakshmi has even inspired medical and biological professionals to have the courage to come forward with their own experiences with endometriosis and dive into research about endometriosis like MIT bioengineer Linda Griffith.

Scouted While Studying Abroad in Spain

Everyone's careers may start in an untraditional manner similar to Hollywood icons like Lakshmi. While a college student on her study abroad trip in Spain, she was discovered at a bar by a modeling scout in Spain. It changed the course of her career. However, Lakshmi was concerned about a scar on her body that was a result of a car crash when she was 14, which she wrote in a personal essay for VogueLittle did Lakshmi know, her scar actually was one feature that encouraged photographer Helmut Newton to book her for some of her first photoshoots in her college years as a model.  Even when Lakshmi chemically tried to reduce the look of the scar, Newton thought it was beautiful and wanted it restored to its original look.

Her Work With The ACLU and United Nations

Lakshmi is also a human rights activist who has done work with the ACLU and United Nations. With the ACLU, Lakshmi focuses on immigrant's and women's rights. Her official title is ACLU artist ambassador for women's rights, immigrants' rights. Specifically, Lakshmi has even discussed the capitalization of ethnic food and whitewashing foods in culinary shows.

Since 2019, Lakshmi has been a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) highlighting the inequality, discrimination, and empowerment of those who are disenfranchised around the globe. Her work will provide awareness to reach the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

A Go-To Meal Is Fried Chicken

Though observing incredible chefs daily, Lakshmi's favorite meals are lowkey. Her go-to meal is simple: fried chicken. However, to stay true to her Indian roots, she prefers it with a twist of green mango powder.
