League of Legends has over 150 total champions and is closing in on 160 before the end of 2022. With each character having their own unique lore, it only makes sense that many of the characters would have intertwining stories.

Among those intertwining stories, many characters are bitter rivals or enemies. Some are rivals because they're from opposing nations like Piltover and Zaun or Noxus and Demacia, while some are rivals because they're involved in conflicts within their own nation. Whatever the reason, great League of Legends rivalries should have a good reason behind the rivalry and a good story behind it.

Garen Vs Sylas

The nation of Demacia is in a state of intense civil conflict. Demacia's anti-magic policy is the most extreme in Runeterra, and mages are criminalized. Garen, a high-ranking noble warrior, is constantly at odds with Sylas, the freedom-fighting mage who uses shady and violent tactics to liberate the mages of Demacia.

What makes this rivalry so fascinating is that neither member of the rivalry is a particularly good person. The "hero" of their rivalry is Lux, Garen's younger sister with whom Sylas grew very close. According to Reddit, Sylas belongs in a movie in the League universe. Any League of Legends movie would be a perfect stage for these two, but fans can also see them in the Lux comics series.

Ashe Vs Sejuani

For a brief time, Ashe and Sejuani were Battlesisters in the frozen tundras of the Freljord. After a vicious attack on a local tribe, Ashe stopped Sejuani and protected the assaulted tribe. After declaring Ashe a traitor, Sejuani parted with the eventual queen, and the two became leaders of rival tribes.

The warring tribes of the matriarchal Freljord have always been one of the most fascinating League of Legends storylines. While they may be a bit secluded from the rest of Runeterra, Ashe and Sejuani's conflict also draws in fan favorites like Tryndamere and Braum. For fans looking to see more out of Ashe, the Warmother comics are about her story.

Lucian & Senna Vs Thresh

Split image showing Senna and Thresh in League of Legends

The sentinels Lucian and Senna's great conflict against the Thresh began when the chain warden trapped Senna in his lantern of souls. Lucian made it his mission to get his wife back from Thresh's clutches, and eventually, his mission was a success. After Senna was freed, she gained powers from the black mist within Thresh's lantern.

Now that both parties have parted, the next conflict will have both Lucian and Senna able to fight against Thresh. After gaining new powers under Viego, Thresh is even more of a threat to both the Shadow Isles and the entire world. Of all the rivalries in Runeterra, Lucian and Senna vs Thresh is one of the most widescale and ongoing.

Miss Fortune Vs Gangplank

Bilgewater isn't exactly home to the cutest characters in League of Legends, but it certainly has some of the toughest. Among the seafaring pirates are Miss Fortune and Gangplank, mortal enemies. When she was younger, Gangplank killed Miss Fortune's parents to steal a pair of guns that Fortune's mother crafted. Later in life, Miss Fortune destroyed Gangplank's ship and denied him rule over Bilgewater.

Gangplank vs Miss Fortune is a more down-to-earth rivalry than some, but Miss Fortune had an important role to play in the ruination story, and Gangplank has been involved with Bilgewater champions that travel the globe. Their rivalry has created ramifications throughout their nation. For fans looking to see more about MF and Gangplank, the Ruined King game features plenty on their backstory.

Morgana Vs Kayle

Morgana and Kayle in League of Legends

Perhaps the most cosmic of all rivalries is a pair of sisters fulfilling the roles of fallen angel and angel. While both are part human and part celestial, Morgana sides with her human self while Kayle sides with divine judgment. In most of her story, Morgana has bound her celestial wings and chooses to walk on the soil with humans, while Kayle uses her wings freely to deliver justice to those she views as evil.

Morgana and Kayle's story has grown throughout the years, with Morgana originally being simply the evil sister. Now, Morgana has been interpreted to be the more morally just of the two. The "evil light and good dark" is an increasingly common trope in fantasy, and Kayle and Morgana are a more complicated version of that core idea.

Kassadin Vs Malzahar

Kassadin lived much of his life as a wandering desert dweller who lived a life of adventure while providing for his daughter Kai'Sa. Due to Malzahar, the "prophet of the Void," Kassadin's wife was killed, and his daughter was plunged into the Void. After becoming armed with the powers of the Void himself, Kassadin has set out to destroy Malzahar and his cult.

Kassadin and Malzahar are similar to Garen and Sylas in some ways. The conclusion of this struggle hasn't come to pass in the lore, but most non-Malzahar players will certainly be rooting for Kassadin and Kai'Sa to get revenge against the prophet of the Void.

Rengar Vs Kha'Zix

Rengar vs Kha'Zix in League of Legends

After journeying from the Void, Kha'Zix made it his mission to devour any beast that he could find. One day, he finally met his match in combat with the merciless Rengar. After a battle lasting all night that ended in near mortal wounds, Kha'Zix managed to slice Rengar's eye and both hunters were driven back. Both made it their lifelong mission to finally defeat the other.

While many League of Legends rivalries are born from revenge for loved ones or extreme philosophical differences, Rengar and Kha'Zix find beauty in simplicity. Their sole reason to fight one another comes from the thrill of fighting, perfect for two characters that function in-game as opposing assassins.

Jayce Vs Viktor

Split image showing Jayce and Viktor in League of Legends

Two of the greatest inventors in Arcane became the closest of coworkers and most bitter of enemies. Spoilers for Arcane fans: Viktor's obsession with hextech and mechanisms eventually went too far in the lore, and he became a hextech-powered cyborg that retreated back to his home nation of Zaun to spread his mechanical revolution to others. Jayce's mission became to stop his former lab partner.

The most tragic rivals are those that used to be best friends, and while Jayce and Viktor were never best friends in the original lore, Arcane may be changing that. The ramifications of Arcane on the official lore have yet to be addressed by Riot, but even if Jayce and Viktor's brotherly love doesn't become part of their main story in LoL, the two are still incredible rivals.

Swain Vs Irelia

Split image showing Swain and Irelia in League of Legends

The Noxian invasion of Ionia is one of the greatest conflicts in League of Legends. In the center of the entire conflict are Noxian's grand general and Ionia's greatest warrior. When Swain, a character many believe should appear in Season 2 of Arcane, and an army of Noxians had invaded Ionia, it was a young Irelia that defeated Swain and severed his left arm. After his failure, Swain gained the power of a demon and conquered the most powerful nation in the world, his home Noxus, in one night. Now as the ruler of Noxus, Swain seeks to expand his empire as far as he can.

Swain and Irelia are two of the most powerful human characters in all of League, and their battle gave rise to much of the conflict in the game. Swain and Irelia have yet to clash again, partly due to the Shadow Isles and Piltover getting most of the new lore love lately, but their influence over Runeterra is constant.

Vi Vs Jinx

Split image showing Vi and Jinx from Arcane

Powder and Vi began as sisters in a part of Piltover's undercity that would eventually become Zaun. After the two were separated following an accident, they took up opposing sides on the war between Zaun and Piltover. While Vi now works with the enforcers and her love interest Caitlyn, Jinx is the loose cannon that all of Piltover fears.

Some conflicts influence nations, and some are incredibly personal; Vi and Jinx's rivalry covers both. Their impact upon Piltover and Zaun is massive, and any League fan needs to watch Arcane to see where their story takes them.
