Tony Scott To Direct Statham, Rourke & Bardem?

Director Tony Scott is lining up his next project, 'Potsdamer Platz', which has Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and Javier Bardem attached to star.

Tony Scott, brother of famed director Ridley Scott, is certainly a busy man these days. He remade the train-heist thriller The Taking of Pelham 123 last year, then immediately moved on to another train-set thriller starring Washington and Chris Pine, Unstoppable (which has suffered some behind-the-scenes troubles).

Apart from his multiple producing duties (plus those listed on his IMDB as "In Development"), Scott has three upcoming directorial efforts. The first two are Emma's War and a remake of The Warriors, but the third is a project that has long been close to his heart, called Potsdamer Platz.

Deadline is reporting that once Unstoppable is over and done with, Scott will next direct Potsdamer Platz. But the really exciting part is the actors who are circling the project. Want some names? How about Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and Javier Bardem? That enough awesome for you in one movie? :P

Rourke's name has been in the mix since last year, when Scott mentioned him in an interview with Coming Soon.

Supposedly Scott had been trying to get his Crimson Tide star, Gene Hackman, to take a role in Potsdamer Platz as well, but sources say that likely won't happen. Hackman hasn't acted since Welcome to Mooseport in 2004 and has been sticking to writing books for the last few years.

Although none of the three actors rumored for Potsdamer Platz appear to be officially signed on yet, it's looking likely that they will star. The plot is described as being about two soldiers in a New Jersey-based crime family who try to expand internationally. Hmmm, I wonder if Tony Soprano has ever dealt with them...

For those of you still trying to work out what that title means, it refers to a busy central train station and "bustling commerce center" in Germany. However, it's not exactly a name that rolls easily off the tongue and Deadline is saying that by the time financing and distribution is sorted out for the fall shooting start, the film's title will likely be changed to something else. The location is also supposed to be getting changed to Puerto Rico.

Tony Scott and his Scott Free production team have been working on Potsdamer Platz as far back as 2000 when the script was acquired. It was originally written by Buddy Giovinazzo but was rewritten by Sexy Beast writers David Scinto and Louis Mellis. Several studios are said to be interested in the film, including Relativity Media and Lionsgate, but 20th Century Fox will probably get first shot at it, since that's where Scott Free is based.

I'm a big fan of Tony Scott as a director, but I know a lot of people don't like his overly-stylized way of telling a story (see: Man on Fire, Deja Vu, and The Taking of Pelham 123). However, I always find his movies highly entertaining, even if they don't always offer much more than just popcorn junk. I don't know anything about Potsdamer Platz other than the plot description given over at Deadline, but the names Statham, Rourke (who will appear in The Expendables together) and Javier Bardem have me on-board with no further questions asked.

Do you like the sound of Potsdamer Platz? What do you make of the trio of actors that are interested in the film (awesome or what)?

A fall start shooting date is being eyed for Potsdamer Platz, but no release date yet.
