Vicarious Visions, the developer of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remaster, planned to remaster 3 + 4 before the project was cancelled by publisher Activision. The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, which kicked off in 1999, lets players hop on a virtual skateboard and score points by pulling off various stunts. While a return on Xbox for Tony Hawk has been heavily rumored, the skateboarding legend has seemingly debunked the idea of another old-school remaster.

Released in 2020, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 serves as a robust remaster of the first two games in the long-running series. The game seeks to authentically recreate the feeling of these iconic titles, though it does introduce new mechanics and features that were only introduced in later series entries. Various additional tricks from subsequent Pro Skater games were added, though players do have the option of disabling them. Create-A-Skater and Create-A-Park modes also give players ways to customize their experience, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 introduces modern skaters like Riley Hawk and Lizzie Armanto. An updated rerelease of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S recently enhanced the skateboard simulator further with improved textures and higher frame rates.

During a conversation with Twitch streamer and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater devotee andyTHPS, Tony Hawk himself reveals that a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remaster was cancelled by Activision. Like the first remaster, this title would have presumably bundled the third and fourth entries in the series together while modernizing them for current-generation hardware. Unfortunately, Hawk explains that after developer Vicarious Visions disbanded Activision could not find another developer to work on the project. While development on the remasters could theoretically continue in the future, as of now Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 are a mere fantasy.

While Activision cancelled Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, a full Tony Hawk Pro Skater sequel could possibly still be on the table. Some fans believe that Activision has teased a new installment in the skateboarding series through pieces of official promotional art, though these could simply be innocent illustrations. Activision's treatment of the Crash Bandicoot franchise sets precedence, however, since the original platformer trilogy was also remade by Vicarious Visions in 2017. The platformer remaster was then followed by Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, a full-blown sequel to the classic titles, so perhaps the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise will receive a new installment in the same vein.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was beloved by fans of the long-running series, but the titular superstar has confirmed that additional remasters have been cancelled. Pro Skater 3 + 4 could have introduced even more tracks, boards and skaters to the mix, but sadly Vicarious Visions was dissolved before the concept could become reality. Still, Activision could potentially create an entirely new Tony Hawk's Pro Skater title under the watchful eye of Xbox.
