Fans may have little to no detail regarding what they can expect from Tomorrowland, but the 2014 release is still among the most highly-anticipated films to hit theaters next year.
The film – which stars George Clooney – is, of course, the much-talked-about science fiction epic from director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) and screenwriters Damon Lindelof (Prometheus) and Jeff Jensen. Though the film's story remains a mystery, the plot will reportedly tie back to the Walt Disney theme park "land" of its title. Thanks to a new addition to the Tomorrowland cast, the studio has dropped a few more tidbits about the film.
Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) has joined the cast of the film as the female lead. Her character is described in a Disney release as "a high school girl with an unconventional understanding of technology [who] is launched on a journey to reclaim her future."
That description doesn't really give too much insight into the film's plot, though a few items can be gleaned from it. Robertson's character being a high school student indicates that the film will be set – at least, in part – on Earth and not entirely in space or some other fantastical setting. Therefore, it's also fair to assume that the aforementioned "journey" will be both a literal and metaphorical term, referring perhaps to the extensive travelling (through space and time?) that is required to reach Tomorrowland.
As far as how she'll figure into the plot, it's possible that she's playing Clooney's daughter. This would especially make sense considering Disney is sure to target this one for family audiences, hence its holiday season release date. This is all pure speculation at this point, though Disney will likely unveil more information at next month's D23 expo.
Still, this announcement marks another strong addition to an already-solid cast. In addition to Clooney, Robertson joins Hugh Laurie (presumably in a villain role), Raffey Cassidy (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Thomas Robinson. She is a bit of an up-and-comer, having starred on The Secret Circle and Life Unexpected prior to her current role on Under the Dome. Robertson is also set to appear in this fall's Delivery Man opposite Vince Vaughn.
