With the arrival of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the most recent Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, it is still unknown when the next title will be released. As one of gaming's truly classic series, it would be extremely surprising for a new Tomb Raider game to not release on this generation of consoles and fans may not have to wait too much longer for an announcement.

Tomb Raider is one of the most popular series in modern gaming. The original Tomb Raider, which released in 1996, laid the foundation for action-adventure games moving forward. Popular series like Prince of PersiaUncharted, and Assassin's Creed may have all turned out differently if it weren't for Tomb Raider, and Lara Croft is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Now, 25 years later, Tomb Raider is in the middle of a year-long anniversary celebration.

As a part of the 25th anniversary celebration, the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Survivor Trilogy was released on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X last month, and Lara Croft has even made her way into Fortnite Season Six as a featured skin in the Battle Pass. But since the release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018, there hasn't been any official word about a new title being in development for the series. Multiple Tomb Raider titles have been released in each generation of consoles since the original PlayStation, so it's hard to imagine that one of the most iconic series in gaming won't be making an appearance at some point on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The question is when, and it wouldn't be a surprise if an announcement is made as part of the 25th anniversary celebration this year.

Why Tomb Raider Games On PS5 & Xbox Are Likely

Camilla Luddington's performance as Lara Croft was one of the most memorable parts of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy. From an innocent researcher stranded on a deserted island in Tomb Raider to the hardened Lara Croft seen in Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Luddington's performance was a fresh take on a beloved character. This version of Lara Croft was grounded, strong, and emotionally well-rounded, making her the definitive version of the character for many fans. Whether a new Tomb Raider title on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X would be a direct follow-up to the reboot trilogy or not, it would be disappointing to not have Luddington return to the role of Lara Croft.

In all likelihood, a new Tomb Raider game isn't too far away. It's been two and a half years since the last entry in the series was released and Crystal Dynamics discussed future plans for the franchise earlier this year. There will almost certainly be a new Tomb Raider game released on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but fans will have to wait for any official announcements to know for sure.
