Alicia Vikander stars as Lara Croft in the new trailer for the movie reboot Tomb Raider. Video game film adaptations do not have the greatest track record, but Warner Bros. Pictures is hoping to finally change that this year. The new Tomb Raider marks the second attempt at a movie franchise for Lara Croft, following the previous iteration with Angelina Jolie. In order to bring the game to life in a new way, director Roar Uthaug is taking control of Croft's new adventure.

Marketing for Tomb Raider kicked off last year, but it didn't exactly put its best foot forward. The first Tomb Raider trailer generated mixed responses, while the first Tomb Raider poster became a hot topic for conversation for... odd reasons, to say the least. Since then, things have largely gone quiet for Tomb Raider, outside of another poster and a few photos of Vikander in the film. Following reports that a new trailer would be on the way this week, it has finally arrived.

While this trailer include some familiar footage of Tomb Raider's big action set pieces, it also dives deeper into Lara's upbringing. The trailer focuses heavily on her relationship with her father, played by Dominic West. This shifts the focus more onto Tomb Raider's character drama, as opposed to relying solely on the action to sell the film. It also offers more clues about the movie's story, especially once Walton Goggins' character enters the picture.

Goggins is set to play the film's main antagonist Mathias Vogel, who has been stranded on an island for seven years when Lara stumbles upon him. He says Mr. Croft left him there, but as the villain, it may not be wise to put much stock in his credibility. It appears he will be working with Lara in some capacity, but it isn't clear if this is a mutual partnership or if she is being forced to help him. Regardless of how their partnership begins, it doesn't look like it will last long.

Hopefully, Tomb Raider will give Goggins enough to work with to make Mathias a worthy opponent for Vikander as Lara Croft. Otherwise, it may fall on the Oscar-winning Vikander to carry the film and elevate it above being another forgettable video game-inspired action movie.
