A talented artist has recreated some of Tomb Raider’s most iconic levels as beautiful vintage travel posters. This year, the Tomb Raider franchise turns 25 years old, and Crystal Dynamics will be honoring Lara Croft and all of her adventures with a series of homages and throwbacks throughout 2021. While it has been confirmed that a new game is not on the cards in the immediate future, a new Netflix adaptation of Tomb Raider has been announced as part of the franchise’s quarter-century celebrations. This series will take place after Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which saw Lara Croft discover the ancient Incan city of Paititi.
When Lara Croft first burst onto gamers' screens in the original Tomb Raider, she was on the hunt for the lost pieces of Scion across Peru, Greece and Egypt. This debut title culminated in Lara battling Natla, former ruler of Atlantis, to the death inside an ancient pyramid on an uncharted exotic island. In the 25 years since Tomb Raider's launch, Lara Croft’s has amassed a great following. Lara is often credited as being the catalyst to give women a have a much stronger presence within video games and is largely viewed as one of the most iconic characters in the medium. She was the only female to have a star on the now removed Walk of Game attraction, featured alongside other greats such as The Legend of Zelda’s Link and Halo’s Master Chief.
Inspired by Lara’s classic adventure, a series of Tomb Raider locations have been masterfully imagined as vintage travel prints by Twitter user ToddR_. Showing off Peru, Egypt, Atlantis and Greece, these posters may seem impressive but unassuming at first glance. On closer inspection however, clever Tomb Raider references and Easter eggs that have been included into each design can be discovered. The rocky and lush terrain of Peru shows a large T-Rex shadow imposingly set against the background, the Midas statue within the poster for Greece is holding a small golden figure, the tranquil beach front of Atlantis is interrupted by Natla’s yacht, and Egypt’s reimaging sees an ominous creature creeping through the entrance to a tomb.
While a game for the new generations of consoles may not be happening soon, there is still plenty happening in the Tomb Raider series for fans to look forward to. Along with the aforementioned Netflix adaptation, there is also a sequel to Alicia Vikander’s 2018 Tomb Raider film and a new Tomb Raider mobile game in the works. While the film’s schedule has been pushed back to an unknown date, Tomb Raider Reloaded is still on course for a 2021 release.
Crystal Dynamics has promised plenty of surprises this year. If the surprises from franchise developers are anywhere near the quality of this fan artists’ dedications, Tomb Raider enthusiasts are likely in for a wealth of announcements in 2021.
