The pair allegedly first hooked up at Coachella in 2022, and have spent the subsequent months getting into a full-fledged sexual relationship, at times reportedly even in Tom and Ariana's home while the latter is asleep. According to Kristen's podcast, Sex, Love, and What Else Matters, Ariana found out about the affair while Tom's band was performing the night before the news broke to the public. Kristen claims Ariana saw a screen recorded video of Tom and Raquel cheating over FaceTime on his phone, and confronted him shortly thereafter.

Ariana broke off their relationship quickly and deleted her Instagram account. Vanderpump Rules cameras rolled the following day, as Raquel and Tom filmed together to talk. It was reported that Raquel would likely try to play the victim in the scenario, but the reports were refuted quickly, along with her claims that cast member Scheana Shay physically assaulted her after finding out about the affair. Tom has issued two statements after the scandal broke. The first statement discussed his restaurant, asking fans to please not blame his business partners for his personal failures. After receiving backlash, Tom released another statement, where he apologized to Ariana and all the other people he's hurt.
The Vanderpump Rules cast hasn't taken the scandal lightly, with many taking to social media to show their support for Ariana and their disdain for Tom and Raquel.
