Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Tom Holland thinks Spider-Man could beat up Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but there’s one huge caveat. Holland is about to make his sixth MCU appearance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in No Way Home on December 17. It will pit him against a handful of legacy villains, including 2002 Spider-Man’s Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Spider-Man 2’s Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro (Jamie Foxx). This is possible thanks to an ever-evolving multiverse, which may facilitate the introduction of the X-Men/mutants in future films ala Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Like Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man film, X-Men (2000) helped to kick off the golden age of comic book cinema. It’s no secret that Jackman’s Logan/Wolverine is the most revered character to come out of Fox’s subsequent franchise. He played Weapon X seven times before his swan song in 2017’s R-rated Logan, following an aging Wolverine whose healing ability is failing due to adamantium poisoning. While Jackman has been adamant he won’t don the claws again, Disney/Marvel Studios’ acquisition of Fox makes it possible for him and his fellow mutants (along with the Fantastic Four) to appear in the MCU.

During a recent interview with Geek Culture Explained, Holland was asked if his web-slinger would be able to combat Jackman’s Wolverine. As a clear fan of the genre, Holland’s answer was well-informed and equipped with an essential caveat. Read what he had to say below:

"I'd beat up that old man [Logan]. [But if it's] X-Men: Origins Wolverine, he's going to batter me... I think Wolverine beats Spider-Man every single time because there's no amount of battering that Spider-Man can do. And also, Spider-Man doesn't kill people and Wolverine does. So that is a huge advantage to have in a fight. I don't think that Peter Parker would kill Wolverine. Especially not Hugh Jackman."

Logan Movie Ending Wolverine Hints

If Logan proved anything, it’s to never count Wolverine out; even against a seemingly impervious clone of himself or, potentially, Spider-Man’s super strength. At the end of Logan, its titular character died at the hands of X-24 (but not before the latter met his demise as well). In No Way Home, villains who died fighting Spider-Man are being plucked from the multiverse, which sets up the return of other characters who died in past franchises. Jackman will probably leave the pitch-perfect Logan be, but he could join the MCU for one movie. After that, a new Wolverine would be introduced to the main timeline.

Ryan Reynolds, who has been desperate for a Deadpool/Wolverine crossover, made his “MCU debut” alongside Korg in a promotional video for Free Guy earlier this year. Not only is Marvel Studios confirmed to be moving forward with Deadpool 3, but No Way Home’s Jon Watts will be directing a Fantastic Four movie. With Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield rumored to appear, No Way Home could set a new MCU precedent for honoring the past while paving the way for the future. Robert Downey Jr. is irrevocably tied to Tony Stark, and it’s hard for many to imagine someone besides Jackman playing Wolverine (despite the fan casts…). After No Way Home, Holland has one more MCU film in his contract before the rumored Sony trilogy. This is not to say that Spider-Man will fight Wolverine one day but they could meet. Or, at the very least, exist in the same universe.
