Tom Holland goes inside the emotional hug between himself and the two other Spider-Men in Spider-Man: No Way Home when the scene was shot. 2021 ended on a big note for Phase 4 as Peter Parker's trilogy came to a more than proper conclusion. As Peter had to deal with the aftermath of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the threequel also served as the MCU's latest exploration of the multiverse. Despite the consistent denials from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was universally known that Holland would be sharing the screen with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as part of a massive Spider-Man crossover.

While many movies have been affected heavily at the box office by the global pandemic, it had no effect on Spider-Man: No Way Home. As of February 2022, the third installment has gone over $1.7 billion, making it the third highest-grossing MCU film of all time. The numbers shouldn't come as a surprise as Spider-Man's third outing celebrated three generations of Marvel's beloved web-slinger. The two studios are already developing a fourth Spider-Man film, although Holland has clarified that nothing has been set as they are just in the talking stages.

As Holland can now talk about Spider-Man: No Way Home more freely, the actor has shared new details on filming with Garfield and Maguire. In a recent interview with THR, the 25-year old star was asked about the Spider-Men hug where Holland's Peter bid farewell to his doppelgangers. As powerful as it was for the audience to witness that moment, it had a more significant meaning for Holland on the day they shot that scene. According to Holland, their final scene was inspired by something very similar that had taken place between the three actors. For Holland, it reflected his actual gratitude to Garfield and Maguire being willing to reprise their Spider-Men, saying the following:

"Yeah, that moment was actually inspired by something that actually happened. We were on set shooting the rooftop scene where I meet the boys for the first time, and before one of the takes … It must have been my close-up or something. It was one that really, really required me to bring the emotion to the shot. So I went up to the two boys on the level that they were standing, and I said to them, “Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this. Thank you for being here. Thank you for elevating Spider-Man in the ways that you have. Thank you for being so gracious and allowing me to share this with you. Thank you for taking a leap of faith and coming back.” Tobey hadn’t acted in nearly 10 years, so we all embraced each other, and we were all crying because it meant so much to us. And Jon Watts, Amy Pascal and the writers saw this moment between the three of us and were like, “Brilliant! Well, now we know how they’re going to say goodbye to each other.” So essentially, we just reshot that very real moment between the three of us."

Spider-Man No Way Home Tobey Maguire Andrew Garfield Tom Holland Together

While seeing these movies as a fan is one thing, it's an entirely different experience for the actors who make these moments happen. For a global iconic character like Spider-Man, only a handful of actors in the world have that role on their resume. To hear Holland being just as emotional and nerdy as the viewers says a lot about his appreciation for Spider-Man. When Maguire and Garfield's films came out, Holland was just a kid who had no idea that he would be standing side-by-side with two other Spider-Men one day. All in all, Spider-Man: No Way Home is a unique movie experience that will be hard to replicate.

Due to Spider-Man: No Way Home's colossal success, it wouldn't be a shock to anyone if Sony and Marvel are already looking at ideas on how to bring the three Spider-Men back together someday. Therefore, the biggest question is not if Holland, Maguire, and Garfield will reunite in the future but more so when. Phase 4 has and continues to put a heavy emphasis on the multiverse, which makes it more organic for Maguire and Garfield to return to the MCU down the line. Despite their farewell, it definitely doesn't feel like Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the last time Holland shares the screen with Garfield and Maguire.
