Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Tom Holland thinks a sex scene would be inappropriate for the Spider-Man franchise. Following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s tenures as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Holland joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before returning in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. That film, and its follow-up, Far From Home (2019), established a John Hughes-esque, coming-of-age Spider-Man franchise focusing on a teenage Peter balancing his personal life and web-slinging.

By the end of Far From Home, Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), and his now-girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) know Peter is Spider-Man. In the film’s credits scene, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealed Spider-Man’s secret identity to the entire world and implicated him as a murderer. On December 17, No Way Home will see Peter/Spider-Man become a divisive figure, who has a dramatic impact on his friends and family. Therefore, Peter will turn to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help, hoping the Sorcerer Supreme can make the world forget he’s Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the pair end up cracking open the multiverse, bringing Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Sandman, and Lizard into the MCU. At this point, No Way Home is an epic on par with Avengers: Endgame.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Holland talked about how much love is in his latest epic. In particular, the 25-year-old actor (who portrays a high schooler on screen) was asked his thoughts on sex and Spider-Man. Read what he had to say below:

I don’t think it’s appropriate for the Spider-Man franchise,” said Holland. “We are still very much young kids. Should there be a future for this character maybe one day we will explore that. But at the moment, this is a film about celebrating friendships and young love.”

Holland's co-star and real-life girlfriend, Zendaya went on to say, "Peter Parker is like a little brother,” to which Holland concurred, "No one wants to see Peter Parker having sex! That would be horrible."

Spider-Man and MJ on a crane in Spider-Man No Way Home

Marvel Studios recently debuted the MCU’s first sex scene in director Chloé Zhao Eternals—both the film and its sex scene received mixed reactions across the board. The MCU has done an astute job of depicting romance in the past—from Tony Stark and Pepper Potts to Wanda and Vision. And while sex between adults has been alluded to in the MCU, seeing it happen has never been necessary. Eternals’ scene between Ikaris and Sersi arguably didn’t make their relationship any more compelling. That being said, it’ll probably be a while before audiences get another one.

Sex scenes aside, fans can’t wait to see how this week’s multiversal antics affect Peter and MJ’s relationship. As the end of the Homecoming trilogy, Holland has teased that No Way Home will irrevocably change the core group’s dynamic moving forward. However, the film won’t be the last time audiences see Holland’s Spider-Man, as reports of another trilogy continue to circulate.
