Tom Holland reveals he has a Spider-Man WhatsApp group with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Holland is the latest actor to portray the Marvel superhero on the big screen, having done so in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2016's Captain America: Civil War. His next, highly anticipated appearance will be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which hits theaters on December 17.

Maguire and Garfield are Holland's two live-action predecessors in the role, having played Peter Parker in two distinct franchises for Sony. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, which starred Maguire and ran from 2002-07, is considered a key player in the genre's rise to dominance throughout the 21st Century, with 2004's Spider-Man 2 still ranked by many among the best superhero movies ever made. Garfield then took over in two The Amazing Spider-Man movies from director Marc Webb, and while the duology was not as well-received as the series before and after it, the lead actor's performance was popular with critics.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1's Ali Plumb, Holland explains that inhabiting the Spider-Man suit is a unique experience that has bonded him with his two predecessors. After a few chance encounters got them talking, he says, they realized they were the only ones who could understand this aspect of their lives, and they currently share a WhatsApp group - which, though he at first claims not to know how it started, Holland admits was his idea. He does downplay its importance, however, joking that he's probably the only one to really use it:

We actually do have a WhatsApp group. Yeah, we do, yeah... We set-- I don't know how it got set up, I don't know how it got set up, but... we bumped into Tobey at a Japanese restaurant a while ago, and I took his number, and then I just-- I think yeah, I set it up... I was like guys, listen, we can't all share each other's numbers and not, yeah, have a group chat. I think I'm the only one who's ever spoken in it... 'What's up other Spider-Mans? It's baby Spider-Man here, how's it going?'

Though he laughs at the idea of Garfield and Maguire wanting anything to do with him, the three certainly have a lot they could be talking about. Spider-Man: No Way Home is based on the premise that a Doctor Strange-spell-gone-wrong cracks open the multiverse and sends villains from past Spider-Man film franchises tumbling into the MCU, with the original actors reprising their roles. Fans have speculated that the two previous versions of the hero will follow them through to help Holland's Peter fight them off, though everyone involved has vehemently denied Garfield and Maguire's casting.

Holland's admission of a Spider-Man-actor group text will only feed the rumor mill. His version of the story is certainly plausible, as there's no reason that three actors who played the same character at different times would need to become close enough to send frequent messages back-and-forth. But, that kind of friendship does develop between co-stars, who bond during their shared time on a movie set - such as, for example's sake, No Way Home's. If they aren't in the film together, though, it's very likely that Garfield is using the text chain to complain about how often he gets asked about it.
