Tom Holland isn't exactly the most reliable person when it comes to containing spoilers, which is why Marvel Studios won't allow him to read the Avengers: Infinity War script. It's no secret that Anthony and Joe Russo's upcoming superhero film is going to be unlike anything anyone has ever seen: it's not only the culmination of 10 years of storytelling but it also unites dozens of superheroes against the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin). So, it makes sense that the studio would remain secretive about the story.
Spoilers have become the bane of the filmmaking industry, and actors regularly find themselves battling the urge to reveal any potential details regarding their upcoming projects. The thing is, that can be tough, especially when they are required to give several interviews in one day. To make matters worse, the advent of social media has allowed for spoilers to spread like wildfire, and that's why studios such as Marvel have taken the utmost precautions when it comes to containing story elements. As it turns out, that includes even keeping pertinent details away from people involved with the project, such as Tom Holland.
Holland has been busy promoting his upcoming film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and that means giving dozens of interviews. Since he's already confirmed to be joining the rest of Earth's mightiest heroes in next year's Infinity War, he has had to field several questions regarding the project. However, it seems it might not be as difficult for him to do. Aside from knowing that the main villain is Thanos, Holland told the Toronto Sun that he's being kept in the dark like the rest of us.
“I don’t know anything about it or what it’s about. I know who the villain is, but that’s it. They don’t let me read anything because I’m so bad at keeping secrets.”
It's not that far-fetched for the studio to want to keep everything regarding Infinity War as close to the vest as possible, but it might be shocking to some people to learn that one of the movie's stars hasn't even read the entire script. The thing is, Marvel may not be holding any prejudice against Holland, specifically -- though he has notoriously revealed secrets in the past, such as the fact that the studio is planning an entire MCU Spidey trilogy, in addition to fueling the flame regarding that fan-favorite Iron Man 2 theory -- seeing as Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies, hasn't read the Infinity War script either.
Then again, Holland hasn't proved himself to be the most trustworthy person. People may recall that the actor once walked off set with a copy of the Infinity War script (likely the lines he was given for that day's scenes, similar to how George Lucas managed to prevent spoilers from leaking while producing the original Star Wars trilogy). Everyone is supposed to hand in their scripts at the end of the day, but since he forgot, he thought the best way to handle the situation was to burn the entire script -- and he proved that by posting the video online. Perhaps Marvel didn't find that stunt as funny as the rest of us?
