Tom Holland recently shared he broke his computer when he first learned he was chosen as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man. In the eyes of many fans, the actor has emerged as the best version of Spider-Man. However, he had a long road to securing the gig.

Holland auditioned to portray Peter Parker along with many other hopefuls, some of whom have grown into big names in their own right. For this reason, it wasn’t always clear he would make the cut. While shooting the third installment of his solo Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, the actor had a chance to look back on a difficult audition process.

Holland’s comments came during a conversation with Daniel Kaluuya for Variety. At one point, late in the discussion, the Get Out star asked Holland about his time as the MCU’s Peter Parker. Although Holland says things looked good at one point, even describing going off script with Robert Downey Jr. for one screen test, the actor's confidence was shaken when he didn’t hear from Marvel. That ultimately led to elation (and a broken computer) when Holland found out he’d won the coveted role of Spider-Man:

I remember going on my phone and checking Instagram. Marvel had posted a picture of Spider-Man, of the cartoon. And they said, “Go to our website to find out who the next Spider-Man is.” And by this point, I kind of had assumed I hadn’t got it because no one had called me...So I was like, ‘Okay yeah, I’ll just go and check.’ So, I got my computer and my dog was sitting next to me. I type in Marvel. I still got the article saved on my computer. I did it, and it said, ‘We would like to introduce our new Spider-Man, Tom Holland.' I broke my computer because I like flipped it up in the air. It fell off my bed. My dog went nuts. I ran downstairs, I was telling my family ‘I got it. I got it. I got the part.’

Tom Holland in Spider-Man Far From Home

While it may seem unusual Marvel would keep Holland in the dark, it’s likely executives were simply trying to ensure the casting news would remain under wraps until it was officially ready to be announced. Looking back on it now, the actor would probably agree he didn’t mind the surprise, as it sounds like it led to a truly unforgettable moment in the young performer’s life. Holland’s enthusiasm for playing Spider-Man hasn’t appeared to fade in the years since he made his first appearance, given he stresses to Kaluuya he doesn’t see a narrative gap between his MCU projects and the gritty drama Cherry.

Still, the actor does admit he would like to dip his toes into other genres, singling out horror and comedy as examples. Having emerged as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand talents, with his name shortlisted for potential franchises such as Wonka, it’s clear Holland has made his mark as the MCU’s Spider-Man. It was hardly a given, considering how well-known the character is on the big screen, but Holland’s iteration has stood out. He’s combined the quick wit of his superpowered alter-ego with the uncertainty of a teenager trying to figure out his place in the world. Hopefully, he’ll remain in his Spider-Man role for a good while yet.
