Here’s what the Tom Holland “Frog In Mouth” meme is all about. British actor Tom Holland rose to fame playing Peter Parker and his superhero alter ego Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his Spider-Man debut in Captain America: Civil War before going on to star in the standalone Spider-Man movies Homecoming and Far From Home. A third standalone Spider-Man film is set for release in 2021 but Holland has a busy schedule in the meantime, with a handful of movies premiering in 2020 including The Devil All The Time and sci-fi Chaos Walking.

To say Tom Holland’s star is on the rise is an understatement. But these days an actor's not really famous until they’ve been turned into a meme, and Holland achieved that dubious honor in 2017 when he became the subject of the “Frog In Mouth” meme. The meme began when Tumblr user opossume published a text post stating, “ok tom holland is cute and all but he constantly looks like he’s hiding a frog in his mouth and it’s uncomfortably hopping around in there but he can’t open his mouth or the frogs gonna escape.” Another Tumblr user going by the handle fruitmeats then re-blogged the post with a few pictures of Tom Holland that illustrated opossume’s point.

While it’s true that Tom Holland’s blue steel pout does kind of resemble somebody smuggling a frog in their mouth, not everybody was amused and some of Holland’s fans interpreted the “Frog In Mouth” meme as a jab at his physical appearance. Holland himself, however, found the meme funny and addressed it on Instagram by posting opposume and fruitmeats’ original observations along with the caption, “This is hilarious. I can confirm that the rumors are true.”

The Tom Holland “Frog In Mouth” meme didn’t end there either. It took on a life of its own with people adding to the theory that not only was Holland hiding a frog in his mouth but that the amphibian went by the name of “Dave.” The meme got even more elaborate when an IMDb trivia entry came to light that said James Franco joked about Tobey Maguire’s frog-like features on the set of the 2002 Spider-Man movie, and people hilariously theorized the frog in Holland’s mouth was none other than Maguire himself.

“Frog In Mouth” isn’t the only meme Tom Holland has found himself the subject of since he started playing Spider-Man. A behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home inspired a funny Spider-Mansplaining meme, and a ton of memes surfaced in the wake of the since retracted news that Spider-Man was leaving the MCU. With the release of Spider-Man 3 right around the corner, expect plenty more Tom Holland memes to come.
