Tom Holland Burns Anthony Mackie For Not Having Seen Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man Homecoming International Poster

Anthony Mackie has not seen Spider-Man: Homecomingand the film's main star, Tom Holland, called him out on it at Ace Comic-Con. The convention is taking place this weekend in Seattle, WA and is giving fans a chance to mingle with stars such as Holland, Mackie, and others within the MCU community. Its founders, Gareb and Stephen Shamus, have been main figures in the comics and convention business for more than 20 years.

Many are shocked that Anthony Mackie, who has been playing the role of Sam Falcon in the MCU for five years now, hasn't seen the 2017 blockbuster. Spider-Man Homecoming, which grossed $880.2 million worldwide, has been (almost) unanimously praised by critics and audiences. The movie received a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A rating on CinemaScore. However, it underperformed expectations of grossing at least $1 billion worldwide, and some have actually started to wonder about the box office vitality of the Spider-Man series.

Still, Homecoming star Holland was clearly taken aback by Mackie's confession that he hasn't seen the most recent Spider-Man installment. A live video posted on Twitter shows Holland looking really shocked when Mackie claims he needs to "watch this movie." "I haven't seen the Falcon movie either, oh wait, there isn't one," Holland jokes back, with the audience laughing and cheering loudly. Many on social media have given Holland credit for "the perfect burn."

Even though the conversation was tongue-and-cheek, some people are giving Mackie a hard time for being a part of the Marvel Universe without seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming. But they shouldn't be, especially since Anthony Mackie wouldn't be the only one. Though the film's total gross is high, Homecoming made less than 2007's Spider-Man 3, which received much worse reviews. Some initially put the blame on superhero fatigue, but the major success of this years Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War proved that notion wrong.

Perhaps, even though Homecoming was good, it just wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be. Perhaps there is Spider-Man fatigue rather than superhero fatigue in general. After all, the Spider-Man film franchise has been rebooted three times since it was first directed by Sam Raimi in 2002, with three different actors in the title role. However, it's quite possible that Anthony Mackie will be more interested in the sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is due to start production later this summer. That's of course assuming that Mackie wasn't kidding when he said he hadn't seen Homecoming, as his love for ribbing his costars has become well-known.
