Here's every upcoming Tom Hardy movie after 2020's Capone (formerly Fonzo). With a reputation for providing distinct character interpretations, Hardy is perhaps best known for starring in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises and 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. In the near future, fans can expect to see the acclaimed performer in multiple blockbusters.

Tom Hardy's Hollywood career is in many ways unexpected. He's starred in sci-fi films like Star Trek: Nemesis and Inception; period dramas such as Lawless, The Revenant, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; and blockbusters like Venom and Dunkirk. Plus, he also had minor roles in other war films and series such as Black Hawk Down and Band of Brothers. Along with the various other films in his filmography, it's sometimes difficult to determine what he'll do next.

The last decade has shown that Hardy is deserving of A-list roles, and that he's one of the most fascinating actors of his generation. With Capone, many fans may be reminded of grittier performances from earlier in Hardy's career, most notably in films such as RocknRolla and Bronson, and certainly as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Of course, there's always the danger of going too far with method acting techniques, but it seems that Hardy will be in his wheelhouse moving forward via two big-time character reprisals.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom Let There Be Carnage Title

Directed by the one and only Andy Serkis (Gollum from The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Venom: Let There Be Carnage has long been in the works since Venom released in October 2018. In the original film, Hardy stars as journalist Eddie Brock, who transforms into a superhuman being after a symbiote enters his body. Produced for approximately $100 million, Venom was directed by Zombieland filmmaker Ruben Fleischer and topped $850 million at the box office.

For the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, original Venom co-scribe Kelly Marcel was tasked with writing the screenplay. She previously worked with Hardy on Bronson, and later adapted E.L. James' novel Fifty Shades of Grey for the big screen. Venom: Let There Be Carnage co-stars Woody Harrelson, who made a cameo in Venom as the serial killer Cletus Kasady aka Carnage. The sequel also features Michelle Williams as Anne Weying and Naomie Harris as Shriek. As a director, Serkis is best known for helming the 2017 drama Breathe and 2018 adventure fantasy Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Filming for Venom: Let There Be Carnage ended in February 2020, shortly before COVID-19 temporarily shut down the industry.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage will re-solidify Hardy as one of cinema's most popular actors. Still, the sequel won't release until June 25, 2021, which is several months after its original scheduled release in October 2020. Unfortunately, Sony Pictures was forced to shuffle its 2020 and 2021 schedule in order to accommodate delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. But considering how popular the first movie was with audiences around the world, there's no reason to think Venom: Let There Be Carnage won't be just as successful, if not moreso in the end.

War Party

Way back in March 2017, Hardy was officially announced as the lead for Netflix's War Party. The action film revolves around U.S. Navy Seals, and will be produced by the iconic Ridley Scott and directed by Andrew Dominik (Killing Them Softly). (It's not a remake of the 1988 movie of the same name.) The script will be written by Dominik and Harrison Query, the latter of whom makes his feature debut. As of now, War Party's supporting cast hasn't been announced.

Based on Dominik's resume, War Party will be a gritty production that will seemingly explore the psychology behind Navy Seal operations. In 2007, Dominik released The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, an unorthodox western starring Brad Pitt as the titular American gunslinger who was killed in 1882. While Dominik's second feature was indeed a box office flop, it's since become somewhat of a cult classic given its existential thematic elements within the 160-minute runtime. Killing Them Softly also stars Pitt and similarly addresses morality themes, albeit with a more cynical edge. War Party will likely feature a restrained performance from Hardy, in which he'll be able to showcase small performative nuances while starring as a Navy Seal.

Mad Max: The Wasteland

Less than two weeks after Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in 2015, director George Miller teased a future installment starring Hardy. The working title is Mad Max: The Wasteland, and will reportedly be a prequel to the 2015 blockbuster. Produced for around $150 million, Mad Max: Fury Road made over $375 million at the box office and was highly regarded as one of the year's best films. Since then, however, there's only been speculation about Mad Max: The Wasteland's storyline.

What is known is that Hardy is attached to three more Mad Max films beyond Mad Max: Fury Road. According to the actor (via Variety), "Everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived. Inevitably it’s a business.” Looking ahead, it seems most likely that Mad Max: The Wasteland will release sometime after the expected 2022 premiere of Mad Max: Furiosa, another franchise installment based on Charlie Theron's character in Mad: Max: Fury Road. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy has been reportedly attached to the film, and production is supposed to take place sometime in 2021, if the coronavirus pandemic doesn't delay the film. As long as the Furiosa spinoff doesn't have the same production and post-production schedule of Mad Max: Fury Road, it should release within a year or two after production wraps up.

Mad Max: The Wasteland has been delayed, however, because of a pending lawsuit, one that stems from Miller's company not receiving a $9 million bonus payment from Warner Bros. In July 2019, the filmmaker seemed confident that more Mad Max films would be produced, but much has obviously changed since then. So, Tom Hardy fans, it seems that Capone and Venom: Let There Be Carnage are the actor's only confirmed projects at the moment, as both have been filmed, though a character reprisal as Max Rockatansky does seem inevitable as the 2020s progress.
