Capone distinguishes itself from other media portrayals of the legendary crime boss by following him in his later years, seeing the mobster as an aging man suffering from dementia and being haunted by his violent past. This is hardly Hardy's first gangster role, so whether someone is looking to prepare themselves for his latest venture, or they're hungry for more after seeing it, these ten performances are a must-watch.

Bob Saginowski - The Drop (2014)

The final performance from Sopranos star James Gandolfini, The Drop (2014) follows Hardy as Bob, the tender at a Brooklyn bar owned by the Chechen mob. The bar, run by Bob and Marv (Gandolfini), operates as a 'drop' -  a place where illegal transactions can be made.

When masked gunmen rob the bar, the owners hold Bob and Marv responsible for recovering the stolen money. The resulting investigation forms new unexpected bonds and tests longstanding loyalties. While Hardy's character isn't a pure gangster, it's still the world he operates in, and the acting and writing are terrific.

Handsome Bob - RocknRolla (2008)

In typical Guy Ritchie fashion, RocknRolla (2008) follows a stellar cast of criminal underworld characters running around London and stabbing each other in the back for a priceless MacGuffin.

The closest thing to the story's main characters is a three-man gang called 'The Wild Bunch', which consists of One Two (Gerard Butler), Mumbles (Idris Elba), and Handsome Bob (Hardy). When a mobster's accountant (Thandie Newton) hires The Wild Bunch to rob her boss's courier, the small-time crooks get in over their heads with gangsters far more powerful than them.

Bill Sikes - Oliver Twist (2007)

Streaming free now on Amazon Prime, not many American viewers have had the chance to enjoy Hardy's performance in the 2007 six-part Oliver Twist mini-series from BBC.

Hardy is detestable as Sikes - a malicious and violent thief, criminal, and murderous member of the gang that Oliver (William Miller) gets involved with. A main antagonist of the story, the crazy Sikes does no shortage of awful things, including beating a woman to death and using a child as a human shield while being shot at.

Clarkie - Layer Cake (2004)

In the movie that earned him the role of James BondLayer Cake (2004) follows Daniel Craig as a London cocaine dealer working for a dangerous organized crime syndicate that gives him two difficult assignments on what was supposed to be his last day of work before early retirement.

As expected, twists and turns derail the dealer's plans, and while he states in the opening monologue that he considers himself not a gangster, but a businessman, though law enforcement doesn't share that sentiment. While the role for Hardy is minor in the story, the fact that he's a member of a drug-dealing criminal organization is certainly gangster.

Alfie Solomons - Peaky Blinders

Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy in Peaky Blinders Season 4

Season two of the popular Netflix crime drama British period series Peaky Blinders introduces Hardy as Jewish gangster Alfie Solomons, one of the few characters in the show who's capable of matching protagonist Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in intelligence and toughness.

Prone to violent outbursts, Alfie's behavior may appear volatile and uncontrolled on the surface, but he proves to be a calculated man who knowingly and effectively uses aggression and intimidation to protect his kin and control and manipulate those around him.

Freddie Jackson - The Take (2009)

While Capone follows a criminal's story in prison, The Take - a four-episode 2009 mini-series - follows the story of a gangster recently released from prison. Freddie rejoins the free world to find that his cousin Jimmy (Shaun Evans) has been making a name for himself as a rising gangster, so with the help of connections he made in prison, Freddie vows to do the same.

A violent womanizer, Freddie shares many traits with Capone, along with his ruthless ambition to do whatever is necessary to rise to the top of the criminal underworld.

James Delaney - Taboo (2017)

An adventurer who returns to London from Africa during the war of 1812 when his father dies and leaves him a small but valuable piece of land in North America, Delaney is violent, ruthless, disgusting, dishonest, scarred, and undoubtedly the smartest and most calculated character on this list.

Operating more individually than within an organization, Delaney doesn't feel like a conventional gangster character, but his constant fighting with the law and brilliant ability to play his enemies against each other is well-acted and well-written. Hardy created the series with Chips (his father) and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

Forrest Bondurant - Lawless (2012)

Capone isn't even the first time Hardy has portrayed a prohibition-era gangster. His first role as a bootlegger came as the oldest brother of the Bondurants - a small crime family operating in Virginia during the Great Depression in Lawless (2012).

The Bondurant brothers face troubling obstacles from rival gangs and a dangerous new special deputy (Guy Pearce) tasked with cleaning up the area, but the tough, capable, and seemingly unkillable Forrest continues to navigate the changing environment as the leader of the family.

Ron & Reggie Kray - Legend (2015)

Tom Hardy in Legend, Playing both Ronnie and Reggie

A two-for-one entry, Legend (2015) sees Hardy portray both Kray twins - two English gangsters that operated in London throughout the 1960s. In a true story, Reggie is an ex-boxer who comes up as an enforcer in the criminal underworld until he's powerful enough to have his paranoid schizophrenic brother Ron released from a psychiatric hospital.

Much like his Al Capone character, Hardy portrays mental disease and severe violence, though it's split between two characters instead of one. The biopic is directed by Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland.

Charles Bronson - Bronson (2008)

The role that inspired Trank to cast Hardy as Capone, Bronson (2008) follows a real-life criminal's mentally disturbed reflection on a violent life while in prison. With a uniquely vaudevillian fourth-wall-breaking narration, the story follows Michael Peterson, who changes his name to Charles Bronson while becoming the most violent criminal in British history.

After receiving a seven-year prison sentence for robbery, Bronson's destructive behavior in and out of prison and psychiatric units results in his sentence being extended to over 30 years, mostly in solitary confinement, where his mind becomes warped into his alter-ego.
