Tom Hanks will reprise his popular SNL character David S. Pumpkins in an upcoming animated Halloween special. A five-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner, Hanks is of course one of the biggest movie stars in the world, beloved by young and old alike. Much of Hanks' fame has been earned by turning in top-shelf dramatic performances, but one shouldn't forget that his early years in Hollywood were primarily spent doing wacky comedies, such as The Money Pit and The 'Burbs.
Hanks' background in comedy has made him a natural fit for NBC's long-running sketch institution Saturday Night Live, with the decorated actor having hosted the show a whopping nine times. This puts Hanks in the top five when it comes to most frequent SNL hosts, alongside fellow luminaries Buck Henry, John Goodman, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin. Over his time on the show, Hanks has participated in many memorable sketches, but it's hard to think of one that caught fire with audiences faster than last year's "Haunted Elevator."
Airing as part of SNL season 42's fourth episode, the Halloween-themed "Haunted Elevator" sketch introduced the world to instantly popular character David S. Pumpkins, played by Hanks. In the sketch, a couple boards an attraction called the 100 Floors of Fright, a clear riff on Disney's Twilight Zone Tower of Terror theme park ride. Pumpkins appears on multiple floors, dancing alongside two skeletons, and annoying the couple with the repeated catchphrase "Any questions?" Pumpkins proved to be a viral phenomenon, and Deadline now reports that Hanks is set to provide the voice of the character in an animated Halloween special.
The 30-minute special is simply titled The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special, and will air at 11:30pm EST on October 28. In addition to voicing Pumpkins, Hanks will also appear on-camera as the character at the beginning of the program. Joining Hanks in the voice cast are Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, and Pumpkins creators Mikey Day, Bobby Moynihan, and Streeter Seidell.
The plot - such as it is - of Pumpkins' special takes place in a small suburban town on All Hallows' Eve, and centers on Pumpkins and friends' attempts to teach two young siblings the true meaning of Halloween. Naturally, this task is inhibited by Pumpkins' general inability to make any logical sense, or explain things. One presumes these kids will end up having many questions indeed, by the time all is said and done.
The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special airs Saturday, October 28 on NBC.
