Tom Hanks has been making movies for more than 40 years, but 2022 is shaping up to be one of the biggest and busiest of his already long and impressive career. The likable actor, who dances in between different genres from intense war dramas to family comedies, has earned two Academy Awards for Best Actor and more recently embraced the title of “America’s Dad,” given his noble and trustworthy nature.

From Forest Gump to Cast Away, Tom Hanks has crafted memorable characters and brought countless biographical portrayals to the big screen, from astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 to, more recently, Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. And his upcoming slate appears to include more portraits of real-life people as well as roles that will see him recreate familiar film characters for new audiences.

Tom Hanks has never truly experienced a career-low, so it's normal for his projects to be among the most anticipated of any year, yet the coming months still look to be a high mark worth noting in his already stunning career. Below is a list of every movie that Tom Hanks has coming out in 2022.

Elvis

Tom Hanks plays Tom Parker in Elvis.

Baz Luhrmann’s long-awaited musical biopic of the "King of Rock and Roll" is finally set for a June 24th release. Playing opposite Austin Butler’s portrayal of Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks will bring to life the singer's controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Filmed in Australia in early 2020, the production shoot of Elvis is when Hanks contracted COVID-19. The movie will mark his first screen appearance since his unexpected cameo in the TV series 1883 in December 2021.

The trailer for Elvis shows Hanks donning heavy aging make-up and a thick Dutch accent, proving how versatile the actor truly is. Given the transformation and over-the-top nature of this shiny production, this movie will likely earn him accolades, perhaps even including a Best Supporting Actor nomination at next year's Oscars.

Pinocchio

Disney’s classic 1940 animated fantasy film gets the live-action remake treatment with Tom Hanks in the paternal role of Geppetto and Joseph Gordon-Levitt providing the voice of the marionette-turned-real-boy. Sporting a curly wig and grey mustache, Hanks looks perfect for the role, one he is no doubt suited for, given his fatherly personality. Reception for Disney remakes has been spotty, but Hanks is a studio staple, between voicing Woody in Pixar's Toy Story films and even playing Walt Disney on screen — also Hanks was once attached to a Jungle Cruise movie. The true excitement for this project lies in the reunion of Hanks and Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis, who last made The Polar Express together in 2004.

Asteroid City

Chinchon, Spain, where Wes Anderson is filming Asteroid City

Little is known about Wes Anderson’s latest project, which follows his critically lauded 2021 feature The French Dispatch. The plot and release date of Asteroid City are being kept under wraps, with some speculating that it has something to do with Europe. Co-starring past Wes Anderson collaborators like Scarlett Johansson, Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman, to name a few, this will actually be Toms Hanks’s first Wes Anderson movie.

The style and sense of humor of Wes Anderson movies will likely place the actor into new, unfamiliar territory, something that is commendable for the actor who is now in his mid-sixties. He seems unafraid of trying something different and unfamiliar, though, like his Tales From the Crypt episode in the early 1990s.

A Man Called Otto

A cranky retired man strikes up an unlikely friendship with his boisterous new neighbors. This is the plot of Fredrik Backman’s best-selling novel A Man Called Ove, which was previously made into a popular, Oscar-nominated Swedish film in 2015. Currently in production under director Marc Forster, the English-language remake will see Hanks play against type as a lonely, fowl-mouthed widower. Set for a Christmas release, A Man Called Otto will see the actor test his dramatic chops, which if done well will no doubt earn Tom Hanks another Oscar nomination for Best Actor at next year’s Academy Awards.
