Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. are two of the biggest movie stars on the planet. Cruise is coming off Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol - the biggest film of his career, while Downey Jr. is currently flying high in The Avengers - the biggest opening film of all time. The pair both starred in Ben Stiller’s comedy hit Tropic Thunder, and it now looks like they’ll be re-teaming for director Jay Roach’s action/comedy El Presidente.
Roach is the director behind a slew of successful comedy films including the Austin Powers trilogy, Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers and he also helmed the upcoming political satire The Campaign, which stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. It appears that El Presidente will also have a political slant, because according to Vulture:
“It follows an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America's worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president's life and they must go on the run.”
Warner Bros. is keen to get the film going with Cruise playing the Secret Service agent and Downey Jr. taking on the role of the President. It’s suitable casting when you look at the real life personas of the two actors: Cruise’s public image is that of an eager professional who will stop at nothing to get the job done, while Downey Jr. comes across as a devil-may-care livewire. The combination of mixing them together could lead to some very interesting on-screen chemistry.
Roach is a proficient comedy director, and movie star charisma can get you so far, but a good quality script is needed to make this film work, and Warner Bros. believes that it has that in Dan Goor’s screenplay. It must be noted that both Cruise and Downey Jr. are very busy actors, with limited time in their schedules, so this dream casting combo may not come to pass. Tom Cruise has a batch of projects in the pipeline including a fifth Mission: Impossible film and Top Gun sequel, while Robert Downey Jr. has Iron Man 3, The Avengers 2 and a possible third Sherlock Holmes movie on the way. So, it’s going to take a lot of juggling to make this pairing work - but if anything can overcome these issues, it's money, and El Presidente has the potential to make heaps of it.
