XDefiant is Ubisoft's latest game set in the Tom Clancy universe, and it already looks and sounds ambitious, with multiple modes and features. Games set in the Tom Clancy universe have become an incredibly important part of Ubisoft's game lineups over the past decade, with games like The Division and Rainbow Six Siege making a significant mark both on players and the industry at large. Now comes XDefiant, looking to unite elements from across games like Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon to form a new, fast-paced, free-to-play, multiplayer shooter.

Ubisoft is looking to let players try XDefiant sooner rather than later, with the hope of using player feedback to create a better game. XDefiant is said to still be in early development, but footage released so far shows what looks to be a fairly polished shooter with an emphasis on gunplay like an Ubisoft multiplayer version of Call of Duty. Even though the game is still in the early stages, Ubisoft has released plenty of information on what players can expect from XDefiant when it comes to gameplay and setting.

XDefiant - Gameplay & Game Modes

XDefiant Gameplay

XDefiant is a fast-paced, 6v6 shooter with an emphasis on playstyle personalization. Players can customize their weapons with a variety of attachments and choose from an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, with the ability to tweak loadouts mid-match as well. Ubisoft says the game will feature authentic weapons, with particular care put into how each weapon looks and feels. Players will also need to choose to join one of the game's various factions, each sporting unique traits and abilities which can be used on the battlefield for a tactical advantage. When it comes to modes, more familiar objective-based game modes like Escort and Domination will be in to start, though Ubisoft says the game will also feature more modes going forward.

XDefiant - Story & Setting

XDefiant Story And Setting

Players familiar with other Tom Clancy games will likely see some familiar factions at play in XDefiant. The game is said to draw on a range of groups from across the Tom Clancy universe and will, eventually, go beyond with new additions as well. Factions like The Division's Cleaners, Splinter Cell's Third Echelon, and Ghost Recon's Wolves can all be seen in the game's debut trailer. The characters players will actually be playing are referred to as Defiants, thought at this point it's not exactly clear what these various characters and factions are fighting about or for. All Ubisoft is saying for now is that these factions will be battling it out in a variety of locations around the world across a selection of different indoor and outdoor environments.
