New footage from the upcoming Tom Clancy's XDefiant has left fans of the franchise disappointed, with many unimpressed with the gameplay. The recently-announced XDefiant is a 6v6 free-to-play shooter which will unite elements from previous games in the Tom Clancy series, but many have criticized the title even before its release.

XDefiant may have only recently been revealed by Ubisoft, but lots of details on the game have already been confirmed. The title will offer 10 maps and five game modes, and will have a heavy focus on customization. Players will be able to choose from a range of primary and secondary weapons which can be tailored to suit their needs with various attachments. Gamers will also be able to change their load-outs during matches, offering a deeper custom experience. XDefiant will feature warring factions from games including Ghost Recon, The Division, and Splinter Cell.

Tom Clancy fans have shared their initial impressions of the game after new gameplay was revealed by IGN. Many fans are seemingly disappointed with what's been highlighted so far, with an overwhelming number of negative comments left on the YouTube video. Multiple users have criticized the gameplay for its lack of innovation, describing the reveal footage as "generic," and questioning what the game could bring to the competitive shooter genre. At the time of writing, the YouTube video has over 2000 "Dislikes" compared to 1800 "Likes," with many users displeased with what looks like an experience too similar to existing games such as Call of Duty: Warzone.

Fans might have their early opinions changed when XDefiant's playable beta goes live. While early footage can sometimes be a good indicator of the final product, Tom Clancy fans have yet to play the game for themselves, and doing so could reveal more intuitive and innovative gameplay than expected. Ubisoft's playtest will allow for fan feedback, which could help to improve the title in time for its release. The first closed beta test is scheduled to take place from today, August 5, starting 11am PT for PC players in the US and Canada.

It might be too soon to tell just how fun Tom Clancy's XDefiant will be, but as a live-service game it will evolve over its lifecycle. With enough time in development and with enough feedback from the players, the title could become something that forges its own identity in the shooter genre. A release date for XDefiant has yet to be announced, but with the game said to be in early development, there's still time for the next Tom Clancy to find its feet.
