Warning! Spoilers ahead for Choujin X chapter 15!

Tomura Shigaraki easily assumed the throne of creepiest shonen villain when he first appeared in My Hero Academia, but mangaka Sui Ishida of Tokyo Ghoul just topped him with his latest monster in Choujin X.

The shonen world understandably crowned Shigaraki the king of creepy villains upon his debut in My Hero Academia because of all of the hands covering his face, head, and shoulders. He later further assured his sovereignty when My Hero Academia revealed that the hands belonged to Shigaraki's deceased family members whom the villain slaughtered on the night his quirk awoke. But a creature in Choujin X reimagines Shigaraki's hands in the most grotesque way possible.

Not much is known about this new villain except what mangaka Sui Ishida revealed in the final pages of chapter 14. Readers assume that the monster is "the creature of the tower" because when the keeper of Yamato Mori Ichiiro Sato mentions that title, it appears in the proceeding final spread of the chapter. It also rekindled a flame that must be of some importance since it warranted a comment from Ichiiro. Unlike Shigaraki who wears the hands of the family members he murdered, the place where the creature of the tower's neck should be consists of two massive arms, and instead of a head at the end of them, there are hands tightly clasped together. The creature of the tower obviously holds a position of power for a man that it addresses as Hume is seen kneeling before it. This is another similarity to Shigaraki for he's the leader of the League of Villains and even vanquishes the rival villainous organization Meta Liberation Army, forcing its members to submit to his will.

Of course, it's creepy that Shigaraki wears disembodied hands like clothes, especially since one of them has a grasp on his face. It's even creepier that they belong to his own family members and creepier still when readers realize their purpose. As revealed in chapter 222, Shigaraki explains that they make him feel both so sick that he wants to vomit and somehow at peace. This in turn fuels an endless source of rage inside of him that gives him the means to destroy everything. As readers of the manga know, villainous Shigaraki discards them near the end of the Paranormal Liberation War when he emerges prematurely from a rehabilitation tank in his semi-awoken state, and they haven't been seen since.

While the history behind Shigaraki's hands are shocking on several levels, there's something especially unsettling about a non-humanoid monster. The creature of the tower does have regular arms and hands and quite possibly has legs as well, but there's no head or neck. Many terrifying monsters don't look remotely human, but the vast majority of them still have appendages that resemble human body parts, even though they might be contorted in some way. Humanoid monsters are therefore not as scary, unlike the creature of the tower. There's also the possibility that its lower extremities don't even consist of legs as they're shrouded in darkness. And what looks like wings sprouting out of its back could very well be just about anything since they are cut off in the final spread. Unfortunately, readers didn't see or learn anything more about the creature of the tower in chapter 15.

This is why the creature of the tower's hand-head in Sui Ishida's Choujin X makes it creepier than the dismembered hands on Tomura Shigaraki's body in My Hero Academia, possibly even any of the ghouls in Tokyo Ghoul. There's nothing more unsettling than a non-humanoid monster, even a villain who wears the body parts of his deceased family all over him.
