Warning: Spoilers for Choujin X chapter 31.2Mangaka Sui Ishida of Tokyo Ghoul just gave a disturbing twist to an aspect of Boruto's most powerful ability in his new manga Choujin X.

Not including the most eye-opening revelations that Boruto just dropped about every Ohtsutsuki jutsu, the most recognizable of them is undoubtedly Karma. The main purpose of Karma is to essentially erase the identity of the inflicted individual so that a member of Ohtsutsuki can take over their body, but what every fan remembers most is that anyone who has Karma can absorb chakra and chakra-based attacks like ninjutsu, usually by raising their arm and sucking the energy into their outstretched hand.

Sui Ishida appears to have taken the basic absorbing ability of Boruto's Karma to a whole other level in chapter 31.2 of Choujin X. When battling a much older and more experienced choujin who not only possesses the same Fire Force-esque ability as her but who inadvertently gave her his power, the newer choujin hero Ely finds herself about to die by her opponent's hands. Ely, however, resolves to win even if it means stealing everything from him. Her resolve must have been quite powerful for her opponent and the last remnants of his choujin power get sucked into the palm of the surprised hero's outstretched hand.

Choujin X's Version of Karma Can Absorb Entire People

Ely absorbs Hume and his power into her hand in Choujin X chapter 31.2

On the surface, the only connection between Boruto's Karma and what Ely just somehow accomplished in Choujin X is that Ely both absorbed her opponent's attack as well as the actual opponent himself into her outstretched hand. Meanwhile, Karma users can only absorb chakra, not whole people, into their palm. Additionally, not much is known about why or how Ely could have done what she did, especially since her choujin ability has always just been producing smoke. But it's likely that it's part of something much bigger than herself, similar to how Karma is much bigger than just being able to absorb chakra. It's possible that what Ely did is related to a phenomenon known as Raise where a choujin becomes less human when they are close to death. The difference, however, is that usually the choujin must say "Raise" in order to unlock the powerup. The theory that Ely may have effectively initiated a Raise is more likely when considering that her opponent turned into smoke right before he got sucked into her hand, since the growth that occurs during Raise relates to the choujin's ability. The only problem is that Ely's opponent was also a Smoke Choujin, so he could have just been reverting to what he could produce himself.

Although it's highly unlikely that Ely is the victim of an ability that will slowly erase her individuality so that a godlike creature can take over her body, her possible Raise is much more disturbing than a Karma user's ability to absorb chakra in Boruto because she can apparently absorb actual people, too. But seeing as this new phenomenon in Choujin X comes from the mind of the creator of Tokyo Ghoul, anything is possible, even something as wild as the Ohtsutsuki from Boruto.
