A new deepfake video imagines Tobey Maguire as Tom Holland's Peter Parker in the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. With just less than three months before it hits theaters, the anticipation for the upcoming Marvel Studios and Sony collaboration project is gradually increasing. Directed by Jon Watts, the movie will tackle the aftermath of the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, which then leads to a much bigger narrative than what Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) anticipated.

There are a lot of things to be excited about Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film has been marketed as Peter's biggest adventure yet, and that says a lot considering what he went through in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It's easily one of the most anticipated blockbusters of 2021, as proven by its record-breaking teaser which became the most viewed trailer in 24 hours. Aside from the direct consequences of Spider-Man's real identity being outed, not to mention Mysterio framing the hero for his death, the blockbuster will also tackle the concept of the multiverse.

Given this, rumors have been persistent about previous actors who played the Marvel hero could appear in the film. The latest Spider-Man: No Way Home promotional clip didn't reveal Maguire or Andrew Garfield, leaving fans scrutinizing every second of the video in the hopes of finding clues about their speculated involvement. One Marvel follower with the YouTube channel, Shamook, however, took a different route, and instead used their time and effort coming up with a deepfake clip imagining what the threequel would look like if Maguire replaced Holland. To be frank, it's a little jarring to watch the aforementioned video. While the deepfake technology has come a long way since it was first introduced and the creator did a seamless job with it, there's something off-putting about watching the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer and not seeing Holland's face in it. Additionally, it didn't help that the trailer kept the MCU actor's voice throughout the teaser. Finally, seeing Maguire looking very young — even younger than Holland, is bizarre. Nonetheless, it's safe to say that with deepfakes being more prevalent and accessible to the public, expect more face swaps like this, in general, moving forward.

Obviously, this video was created with the intention to entertain. However, the deepfake technology has also been used to dupe people with regard to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Knowing full well how much attention it's garnering, one fan digitally created a clip with Garfield supposedly on the set of the movie. This caused a brief commotion online, but the creator eventually admitted that he only did it to “troll the entire internet.” Given this, it's best to wait for any official word whether or not Garfield and/or Maguire are actually in the blockbuster instead of falling for random online videos that can be very deceiving.
