Warning! SPOILERS for Titans season 4.There is good reason to believe that the demon Trigon will return in Titans season 4, beyond a tease in the trailer. The father of Raven was established as a major power in the hierarchy of Hell in Titans season 1 and almost defeated the team before being bound in the Titans season 2 premiere. Fans of the series have been anticipating Trigon's return ever since, believing it is only a matter of time before the demon lord's experience allows him to work around his daughter's power and break free.

The trailer for Titans season 4 suggests that this will be the show's biggest season to date. Beyond setting up the first appearances of Lex Luthor, Jinx, Mother Mayhem and Brother Blood, the trailer also reveals that Deathstroke will return to Titans in some capacity, despite having seemingly died in the season 2 finale. That is a menacing line-up of villains, to be certain, but there is ample reason to believe that Trigon will also be returning before the end of Titans season 4.

Why Trigon Needs To Return In Titans

Trigon in Titans and Brother Blood DC

The biggest sign that Trigon will return in Titans season 4 is the fact that the season's storyline centers around Brother Blood and the Temple of Azarath. In the classic New Teen Titans comics by Marv Wolfman and George Perez that inspired the Titans show, Brother Blood was a cult leader and an emissary of Trigon, who was obsessed with making Raven his bride and bringing about Titans' return of Trigon. While there have been adaptations of Brother Blood in other media that ignored his history with Trigon from the comics (most notably in season 2 of Arrow, where Kevin Alejandro played Brother Blood) it would be wasteful for Titans season 4 to not draw upon that connection.

Additionally, a final battle between Raven and Trigon must occur at some point before Titans comes to a close. Raven's resisting her father's dark influence has been a continual challenge, in both the comics and the Titans series and another battle between the two is expected. There's also the fact that many were disappointed by the anticlimactic execution of Raven's confrontation with her father in Titans' season 1 finale. Facilitating the return of Trigon and another battle would allow Titans to bring Raven's character arc to a satisfying conclusion.

Trigon Could Be Titans Season 5's Main Villain

Another possibility is that the actions of Brother Blood and the Temple of Azarath in Titans season 4 could set up the return of Trigon as the main villain of Titans season 5. This would be a logical development of the storyline and prevent Titans season 4 from becoming too villain heavy, which has been a problem in previous seasons. The only issue with this plan, however, is that Titans has yet to be confirmed for a fifth season, and it would be all too easy to see the show ending on an unresolved cliffhanger, much like Legends of Tomorrow.

New episodes of Titans premiere Thursdays on HBO Max.
