Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Titans season 4.The path that led Sebastian Sanger to become Brother Blood was revealed through flashbacks throughout Titans season 4. However, it quickly became apparent there was something special and sinister about Sebastian Sanger, as he began experiencing the same dark visions as Raven regarding the activities of the Church of Blood. It was ultimately revealed that Sebastian was a child of the demon Trigon and that the Church of Blood believed it was his destiny to bring about Trigon's arrival on Earth.

Most of Sebastian's backstory was revealed through flashbacks in Titans season 4's mid-season finale, "Brother Blood." However, other key details were revealed in Titans season 4, episode 4, "Super Super Mart," which showed the secret history of Mother Mayhem and the Church of Blood and how they were tied to the cult of Trigon worshipers from Titans season 1. All of these flashbacks laid out the sad life of Sebastian Sanger and precisely why he felt compelled to betray his friends in the Titans to embrace his destiny as Brother Blood.

The Birth Of Brother Blood

Titans Season 4 The Birth of Brother Blood

Much of the action of Titans season 4, episode 4, "Super Super Mart," centered around a series of flashbacks showing the life of May Bennett, the talented witch who established the Church of Blood. In 1996, Bennett was recruited by the Organization and came to be chosen as the first woman with whom the demon lord Trigon sired a child on Earth. Unfortunately for May, her child was a boy, and the prophecy regarding Trigon's rise dictated that his heir would be a girl. As a result, the boy was put up for adoption, and May was confined to the same asylum that held Raven's mother, Angela, for 21 years.

Beyond revealing the history of Mother Mayhem, these flashbacks also established the pattern of rejection that defined Sebastian Sanger's life from birth. Sebastian came into the world as a disappointment to his demonic father and was denied his mother's love. This would establish the deep need for acceptance and approval that would define Sebastian's struggles as an adult and ultimately push him to accept his destiny as Brother Blood to facilitate Trigon's return.

The Church Of Blood's First New Recruit

Titans Season 4 The Confessor

The final flashback of Titans season 4, episode 4, "Super Super Mart," further tied the Titans into Brother Blood's destiny. May Bennett's belief that her son was the true heir to Trigon's power won over her friend and fellow Trigon worshiper, Gina, who took advantage of the confusion caused by the Titans' raid on the Organization's asylum in Titans season 1 to free May. As they escaped, they rescued an Organization member called the Confessor, who had earlier offered May a chance to renounce her heresy. The Confessor became the first recruit to the Church of Blood and a key part of Mother Mayhem's plans.

Sebastian's First Video Game

Titans Season 4 Young Sebastian Sanger Brother Blood and Foster Mother

The first flashback experienced by Sebastian Sanger in Titans season 4's mid-season finale occurred in his childhood, shortly after Sandra Sanger adopted him. The young Sebastian, who had grown up in foster care, was overjoyed to learn that he would have his own room. He was also thrilled with Sandra's choice of a "welcome home" gift, a red Gameboy Advance. This established the link the young Brother Blood drew between love and video games and explained why he emphasized the idea of games bringing people together when describing his game to potential investors.

The next flashback to Sebastian's childhood puts a dark twist on the first, showing the day when Sandra Sanger brought another foster child into her home. This child, Lila, had lost an eye and suffered from an undefined illness. Sandra told Sebastian that Lila would have to take his room and pushed him to share his Gameboy with her. While the young Brother Blood agreed because he wanted to be a good boy, he secretly resented Lila for taking what was his. Mother Mayhem seized on this, saying that Sebastian was punished for being stronger when he should have been rewarded.

Sebastian Is Punished For His Intelligence

Titans Season 4 Teenage Brother Blood Corrects His Coding Teacher

Another flashback showed Sebastian's life as a teenager and how he tried to show his talent for coding by interrupting a teacher's lesson to show how the same end could be accomplished more simply. However, rather than being impressed with Sebastian's knowledge and initiative, the teacher resented being shown up and sent Sebastian to the guidance counselor with a note saying he needed to be placed in a Basic Programming class instead of the advanced course. He also told Sebastian to "work on your maturity level." This further established Brother Blood's brilliance and social awkwardness while giving Mother Mayhem another foothold in convincing Sebastian he was hated because he was gifted.

Sebastian Dumps His Girlfriend Julie

Titans season 4 Sebastian Sanger dumps Julie

The final flashback to Sebastian Sanger's past was more recent and centered around his former girlfriend, Julie. The two were revealed to have dated for six months, during which they saw each other every day, and Julie met Sebastian's foster mother, Sandra. However, their relationship took a dark turn on their six-month anniversary when Julie said she had first decided to ask Sebastian out after seeing him in his taxidermy store and deciding she needed to fix him, describing him as "the loneliest man I've ever seen." She also gave him a red Gameboy Advance, like the one he'd had as a child that meant so much to him.

Rather than being touched by Julie's gesture and words, the future Brother Blood became offended by the idea that Julie was first attracted to him out of pity and that she chose to mark their anniversary with a reminder of what he saw as his foster mother's rejection of him. Sebastian dumped her on the spot, saying that Julie was bound to leave him eventually because nothing good in his life had ever lasted and that "I'm not the destination... I'm just a step along the way." This final flashback in Titans season 4 seemed to seal Sebastian Sanger's fate and pushed him down the path to becoming Brother Blood.
