Caution: spoilers ahead for Titans season 3

Is Nightwing dead as Titans season 3 heads into its final stretch, or can he walk it off? "The Call Is Coming From Inside The House" sees the usually astute Dick Grayson make a series of rookie errors that leave him bloody and beaten. Dick lives up to his name by cruelly demanding Superboy shut up and do as he's told, then resorts to Kryptonite dust when Conner tries arguing back. Nightwing gets his wish of facing Jason Todd's Red Hood mano a mano and the battle's going just fine... until every second of Bruce's training falls from Dick Grayson's head, and he foolishly turns his back on a gun-toting bystander.

The bullet nicks Nightwing's neck and blood pours out. As the superhero falls to the floor, a flock of disgruntled Gothamites gather around to bravely kick Nightwing while he's down. Titans season 3, episode 11 leaves Dick Grayson's fate highly ambiguous. Is he dead? Is he on his to way to being dead? Is this a no-win situation for Nightwing?

Judging from the very final shots of a bloody Nightwing in Titans' latest offering, it's clear that Dick Grayson hasn't quite kicked the bucket just yet. As the fine people of Gotham assemble to kick his prone body, viewers can see Dick raise a very feeble (but definite) guard to protect himself, proving he's yet to pass out from the bullet wound and subsequent blood loss. All of Batman's superhero students have undergone rigorous mental focus training, and this should allow Nightwing to cling onto consciousness for every possible second, when an ordinary man would've long blacked out. But even though the Titans needn't be sending Dick's measurements to the local undertaker right away, his situation is precarious.

The blood spurting from Nightwing's neck indicates he's been hit in either the carotid artery or jugular vein - vital points that give and take oxygen to the brain. Injury to either (especially the dramatic Hollywood kind Nightwing just sustained) requires immediate medical attention, or else there's high risk of fatality. The angry mob currently showing Nightwing their shoes means he won't be able to pressure the wound and, looking closely, Dick's guard actually falls just before the scene cuts, meaning loss of consciousness is just around the corner. Things look decidedly dicey for Dick... so what happens next?

Fortunately, Dick has some useful friends trying to track him down. Tim Drake tells Wonder Girl to go find Nightwing, and with her Amazonian abilities, Donna could reach Dick in super-quick time. Elsewhere, Raven's powers respond violently to Dick's injury (another sign his life genuinely does hang in the balance), meaning she and Beast Boy should be able to find their fallen friend easily enough. This is, of course, assuming Superboy hasn't woken from his slumber and arrives before everyone.

In terms of how Dick slides out of this predicament, it's Raven and Beast Boy who might hold the answers. To unravel the Jason Todd mystery, Beast Boy has been investigating the mythology behind Lazarus pits. He and Raven are actually kneeling by one of these magical resurrection pools when Nightwing gets hit. The narrative purpose of Beast Boy spending so much of his Titans season 3 arc researching Ra's al Ghul's hot tubs can't just be to piece together what the audience already knows happened to Jason. Instead, Titans seems to be building toward Beast Boy and Raven tossing Nightwing into their recently-uncovered Lazarus pit, which should fix his neck problem right up.

Why Titans would bring Nightwing back to life so soon after bumping him off remains to be seen. It's possible that understanding what Jason Todd went through when Scarecrow revived him allows Dick to empathize with his fellow Robin. Walking a mile in Jason's shoes might be all that's needed for the Titans to convince Red Hood that Scarecrow's no good.
