Viewers can be forgiven for leaving Titans season 2, episode 9, "Atonement," with a lot of unanswered questions. Dick Grayson finally admits that Jericho died saving him, and the revelation of his secrets breaks the Titans team up. Soon Beast Boy and an initially comatose Superboy are the only ones left in Titans Tower.

It's a strange choice, not least because it makes absolutely no narrative sense at all. Apparently Dick lied to the OG Titans, claiming Jericho was already dead when he got to the church where he was meeting his father; as a result, it's unclear why the Titans broke up in the first place. About the only person who can be justified for blaming Dick for Jericho's murder is Rose, but everybody else piles on as well without good reason. This gives Titans a chance to explore some of the B-plots that have been left in the background, notably Starfire's conflict with her sister Blackfire. Hawk and Dove attempt to go back to their old life, while Dick decides he needs forgiveness, and seeks out Jericho's mother.

There's something very strange about DC Universe's Titans. The first season spent far too long bringing the team together, and so far the second season has only shown one scene in which the Titans even worked together. Let's explore all the questions raised by this decidedly odd new direction.

4. Why Wasn't Anybody Bothered About Deathstroke's Being Able To Get Into Titans Tower?

In Titans season 2, episode 7, Dick Grayson learned that Deathstroke has compromised Titans Tower's security. The assassin-for-hire is able to come and go as he pleases, and he's been enjoying subtly manipulating the Titans, turning them against one another. Strangely, though, this chilling revelation is absolutely forgotten when Dick tells the team the truth about Jericho's sacrifice five years ago. Everybody storms off, including Dick, leaving Beast Boy alone with a comatose Superboy. Nobody stops to question whether or not Beast Boy is safe.

3. Is Nobody Concerned About Jason Todd's Suicide Attempt?

Titans Jason Todd Dick Grayson

Deathstroke's "divide and conquer" strategy had been surprisingly successful, and Jason Todd had become so isolated from the others that he succumbed to despair and attempted to commit suicide. It wasn't just a cry for help, either; the teenager had honestly concluded that the world was better off without him, and Dick only managed to prevent him killing himself by distracting him. Incredibly, not a single member of the Titans shows any concern about Jason, nor do any of them have the grace to apologize for doubting his character. Nobody blinks when Jason heads off with Deathstroke's daughter, Rose. Given their sexy dance routine and brief kiss in episode 7, he probably has a somewhat carnal motive.

2. Why Did Hawk and Dove Think They Could Go Back To Their Old Lives?

Tians Hank and Dawn Sing Together

The Titans go their separate ways, and Dawn decides she and Hank can just head back to Wyoming. Back in Titans season 2, episode 2, the pair had been forced to flee their retirement home when a local drug addict - whom Hank had been trying to help - was turned into a human bomb by Dr. Light. For some reason they think they can just return to their old haunts, change their names slightly, and fit back into the Wyoming community without anybody noticing. Needless to say, it doesn't work, and the addict's sister recognizes them at once. She promises to make their lives a living Hell - and Hank drives off under the pressure, breaking up with Dawn.

1. How Is Starfire Going To Regain Her Throne?

Kory Anders is upset after a ship explodes in Titans

Meanwhile, Starfire learns that her sister Blackfire has taken the throne of Tamaran, even going so far as to kill their parents. She refuses to accept an offer to share the throne, instead deciding she's going to become the revolutionary her sister fears. Whatever Starfire's plan may be, though, the first thing she'll have to do is get off the planet; Blackfire destroys all Tamarean vehicles on Earth to strand her on this backwater world. It's doubtful that Titans' budget will stretch to a Star Wars saga, so presumably Starfire won't be able to get offworld anytime soon.
