James Cameron's Titanic became a phenomenal success when it was released years ago in 1997. It later went on to take its place as one of the greatest movies ever made, having bagged a staggering 11 Academy Awards, which was a record at the time.

The movie made its lead actors soar to fame and has been touted over and over again by fans all over the world as one of the most stunning movies ever made. Yet, contrary to popular opinions are those that offer a different perspective with some fans boldly expressing controversial opinions on Reddit.

The Love Story Distracts From The Real Tragedy

Rose holds Onto Jack in the water in Titanic.

One of the most important aspects of this classic movie is the love story of Jack and Rose. The movie, although narrating the true tragedy of the ship, is essentially an epic romance that ends in tragedy. Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were shot to fame overnight once the movie released.

However, a few fans seem to think that the movie should have been more about the actual tragedy of the ship and not focused so heavily on the romance. By the time the ship hits the iceberg and tragedy strikes, the audience is invested more in the romance between Jack and Rose than in the fate of the hundreds who would go down with the ship. No one should forget that there were other characters introduced that also died that night too.

The Visuals Were More Riveting Than The Story Itself

Visuals of Titanic

Not only does the love story distract from the real tragedy, but this Redditor feels that it also diverts attention away from the stunning visuals that the movie offers.

Titanic was one of the most expensive movies ever made at the time. It literally took the cake for lavish, opulent visuals - whether it be the ship itself, its interiors, and the huge, limitless North Atlantic ocean. Some fans loved that opulence so much, they felt that Jack and Rose's love took away from that.

The Most Boring Three Hours Ever

Titanic By James Cameron

Another fan found the movie to be tedious and "the most boring three hours ever." It seems that sitting through the whole runtime of Titanic was a task.

Although the fan admits that the casting of the movie was amazing and had stunning cinematography, it failed to hold on to this Redditor's attention. Thus, what was meant to be an incredible cinematic experience turned out to be the opposite.

Rose Dragged Jack Into Her Mess

One Redditor has a rather unique opinion that is contrary to most opinions one would come across about its characters. According to this fan, Rose is actually something of a villain who dragged Jack Dawson into the mess that was her own life.

Also, the older Rose was very much aware that the explorers were searching the remains of the vessel for the expensive diamond necklace. Yet, she had had it on her the entire time, which the fan thought wasn't cool at all.

Rose's Fiancé Was The Wronged Party

Cal gives Rose the heart of the ocean necklace in Titanic

Another very controversial opinion suggests that it was Rose's fiancé, the toxic Cal Hockley, that was the wronged party in the entire movie, and deserved better.

Cal was shown to be a controlling, misogynistic snob who made life hell for Rose and Jack - ultimately becoming the quintessential villain in their love story. However, this fan feels that Rose had cheated on Cal with Jack and hence Cal had a point too. He shouldn't be seen just as the villain but as someone who was betrayed, and that even though he had a most dubious personality, Rose wasn't justified in cheating on him.

A Poorly-Acted Romeo & Juliet

Jack and Rose on the Staircase in Titanic

One of the most tragic love stories ever is Shakespeare's classic "Romeo & Juliet" which ended with the lovers dying tragically for each other. Actress Kate Winslet even received an Oscar nomination for her role as Rose.

However, there are some that believe that maybe she shouldn't have got it. A fan feels that this particular movie is nothing but a long-winded version of that iconic romance, way too long with subpar acting. It's neither a beautiful piece of art as many claim nor is it a decent drama or a good imitation of one.

A Good Action Movie After About 90 Minutes

The TItanic sinking in James Cameron's movie.

One of the more ridiculous opinions found on Reddit is a users belief that Titanic becomes a decent "action movie if one skips the first 90 minutes of it."

Seeing that the film was really meant to be about the disaster surrounding the 'unsinkable' ship, it seems so random and bizarre that one could even think it falls into the action genre. Also, skipping the first 90 minutes of a 3-hour long film means skipping practically half the film. In order to fully appreciate the film, one has to understand the characters and their stories.

Rose Was Selfish

Kate Winslet's radiant Rose was almost the heart and soul of the movie. She was the survivor who had lived a full life well into old age and remembered her romance with young Jack Dawson with great fondness.

However, there are a handful of fans that feel like Rose's character wasn't as vulnerable as she was made out to be. In fact, they thought she was rather selfish. Instead of letting her family have the expensive diamond and be financially comfortable. Some even thought she should have given it to Brock Lovett, who had dedicated his life to looking for the necklace. She just threw it into the ocean with some vague implication that she was remembering Jack, which, according to this fan, made her self-centered.

Neither Compelling Nor Believable

The movie won a record number of Oscars, but contrary to what the masses and even critics thought at the time, here's a Redditor who thought that the screenplay for the movie was "neither compelling nor believable."

"The story", this fan states, "is largely formulaic [...] with flat characters who were more like caricatures" than real flesh and blood. The movie failed to intrigue with what the fan felt were mostly forced plot points.

An Ode To Rose' Husband

Gloria Stuart as Rose in Titanic

Not only did one fan feel for Cal, in a uniquely unpopular opinion, there is another one who thought that Rose's husband was the one who had been dealt an unfair hand by life.

Rose was clearly still very much in love with Jack, as implied by the scene where she threw the diamond necklace overboard and then allowed herself to be reunited with him in death. But would fans class this as cheating? According to this Redditor it was. It's safe to say that Jack and Rose fans would profusely disagree...
