We probably won’t ever see an official crossover between Harry Potter and Titanic. Although these two worlds have absolutely nothing to do with each other, we can still imagine what school houses the Titanic characters would be sorted into if they ever were to go to Hogwarts.
The characters of the 1996 film, some fictional and some real, embody personality traits that make them strong candidates for either Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Keep reading to find out what house characters like Rose DeWitt Bukater, Jack Dawson, and Cal Hockley would find themselves in at the famous school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Rose DeWitt Bukater: Slytherin
Rose DeWitt Bukater doesn’t seem like the type who would ever attend Hogwarts, even if she had the chance. But if she were to go to the school of witchcraft and wizardry, she would probably be sorted into Slytherin.
The number-one trait that makes Rose seem like a Slytherin is her ambition. She doesn’t just roll over and accept situations that she’s not happy with—instead, she fights for what she wants like a true Slytherin. We can see from the way that she saves Jack from E-deck that she’s also resourceful in an emergency.
Jack Dawson: Gryffindor
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Jack Dawson has what it takes to make Gryffindor. This house is all about bravery, chivalry, and nerve, and these are qualities that Jack constantly displays during his time on the ill-fated ship.
It takes a very brave person to jump into the ocean to try and save a perfect stranger. It also takes a lot of courage to sacrifice yourself just so someone else can float on a door and avoid freezing to death. We won’t even mention the courage it must take to attend a dinner with snobbish first-class passengers when you hold a third-class ticket.
Cal Hockley: Slytherin
The Sorting Hat would have no trouble sorting Rose’s fiancé, Cal Hockley, into the right house. It’s abundantly clear that Cal is a perfect candidate for Slytherin thanks to his ambitious nature and scheming ways.
It would take a bona fide Slytherin to plan to frame Jack by slipping the diamond necklace into his pocket. Cal is also determined to have Rose, and is prepared to stop anyone else from having her if he can’t—another problematic Slytherin move.
Margaret ‘Molly’ Brown: Gryffindor
Anybody with a nickname like ‘The Unsinkable Molly Brown’ has to be Gryffindor material. Molly has all the personality traits that they value in Gryffindor. Namely, she’s brave, bold, and noble.
This is obvious at the beginning of the film when she shows kindness to Jack even when no one else does. It’s also obvious at the end when she tries to persuade the officer to save the people in the ocean with his lifeboat. She really is a genuine Gryffindor!
Ruth DeWitt Bukater: Slytherin
Like mother, like daughter. If Ruth DeWitt Bukater went to Hogwarts, we have a feeling that the Sorting Hat would place her straight into Slytherin house. After all, it takes a Slytherin to be so ambitious that you’d marry off your daughter to a man she doesn’t love just to obtain financial security.
Ruth is also sly in the way that she forbids Rose from seeing Jack and tries to convince her to ignore her feelings for the sake of their family.
Thomas Andrews: Ravenclaw
It still breaks our hearts to think of Mr. Thomas Andrews sacrificing himself during the sinking of the Titanic out of guilt that he didn’t design a stronger ship. That selfless bravery is a very Gryffindor-like trait, but ultimately, Mr. Andrews would probably be sorted into Ravenclaw.
He might not have designed an unsinkable ship, but that doesn’t mean he lacks intelligence. Like the ideal Ravenclaw, he’s learned and brainy. Considering he’s a shipbuilder, it’s also highly likely that he’s got a creative flair too.
Captain E.J. Smith: Gryffindor
The ultimate act of bravery is to sacrifice yourself so that others have more of a chance of surviving. Any captain who goes down with their ship is courageous beyond all imagination which is why Captain E.J. Smith would definitely make Gryffindor.
We don’t know much about Captain Smith’s personality, other than he’s trusting enough of Mr. Ismay to order the last boilers lit on the ship. But we also know that he’s noble and valiant thanks to his act of self-sacrifice. Gryffindor would be lucky to have him!
Bruce Ismay: Slytherin
Slytherins are typically determined and sly. No Titanic passenger fits this description better than Bruce Ismay, the director of the White Star Line. The movie shows that it’s Mr. Ismay’s idea to increase the ship’s speed, which would suggest that he is partly to blame for the ship’s collision with the iceberg. He wishes to increase the speed because he is determined to make headlines, which is very Slytherin of him.
When the ship starts to sink, Mr. Ismay hops on the nearest lifeboat and saves himself. We can’t help thinking that this is also a total Slytherin move.
Spicer Lovejoy: Hufflepuff
Because he works for Cal, you’d think that Spicer Lovejoy is also a good candidate for Slytherin. While he’s certainly cunning and resolute, he actually displays qualities that make him better suit Hufflepuff.
Lovejoy only tracks Rose so tenaciously because he’s following Cal’s orders. He’s actually super loyal to Cal and is also patient enough to follow Rose around the ship. These are both qualities that would make him fit in well with Hufflepuff.
Brock Lovett: Slytherin
There’s definitely no shortage of Slytherins in Titanic! There are a few Hogwarts houses that Brock Lovett could fit into. From the courage he shows in trekking to the bottom of the ocean for the diamond, you might think that he’s a Gryffindor. But at the end of the day, the Sorting Hat would probably sort him into Slytherin.
Brock makes a living as a treasure hunter and does whatever is required of him to get his hands on the treasure he seeks. Treasure hunting is probably the most Slytherin-like job in existence!
