'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' International Trailer Is Tense & Foreboding

Anticipation for Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson's adaptation of the acclaimed John le Carré novel, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, got heightened with the release of a memorable teaser trailer.

That theatrical preview hinted at a chilling and atmospheric spy flick where secret agents must rely on their wits and brains to survive, rather than their brawn and daredevil attitude. In an age where most spy movies tend to be more about the flash and spectacle (see: the Mission: Impossible and James Bond franchises), it's a welcome change of pace.

A full-length international trailer for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has been unveiled - and, thankfully, it retains the same slow-burn tension, bleak visual style, and ominous atmosphere that made the teaser for Alfredson's star-studded literary adaptation so effective (definitely a good sign).

Here is an official synopsis for le Carré's original Cold War novel:

It is now beyond doubt that a mole, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It is clear that the double agent is one of its own kind. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified, the traitor must be destroyed.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy boasts a intimidating collection of English actors, including Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy, Academy Award-winner Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Oscar nominee John Hurt (Alien), and decorated character actor Ciarán Hinds (Munich). The supporting cast also includes noteworthy names like Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement), Toby Jones (Captain America), Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire), and Stephen Rea (The Crying Game), among others.

The leading man of the film is Gary Oldman, whose turn as the silver-haired manipulator George Smiley is already being hailed as yet another powerhouse performance from the actor. Curious though it may be, Oldman has never even been nominated for an Oscar, despite his universally-renowned ability to disappear into virtually every role he takes on - be it that of Sid Vicious, Dracula, or even the memorably kooky Jean-Baptise Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element.

Regardless of how well Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy ultimately fares during the upcoming awards season, it's one film that just about every cinemaphile out there ought to include on their "must see" list. Between the stellar cast, stylishly shadowy cinematography, and engaging subject matter, it's difficult to imagine that the film won't turn out to be something pretty memorable.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy arrives in U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2011.
