'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' U.S. Trailer Is Flashier, But Still Effective

Early word from the 2011 Venice Film Festival is that Tomas Alfredson's adaptation of John le Carré's influential espionage novel, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, lives up to the expectations, based on both the creative talents involved with the project - and the previously-released trailers for the film, all of which have teased it as being a wonderfully dark and sinister tale.

A domestic trailer has at last been released for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - and it focuses on selling the film as a terse thriller, in comparison to the more atmospheric international previews.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy nonetheless looks like an excellent spy drama, grounded by Gary Oldman's much buzzed-about performance as retired British Secret Intelligence Serviceman George Smiley - a role which could finally land the beloved character actor an Oscar nomination.

Here is an official synopsis for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy:

Based on the classic novel of the same name, the international thriller is set at the height of the Cold War years of the mid-20th Century. George Smiley (Oldman), a disgraced British spy, is rehired in secret by his government – which fears that the British Secret Intelligence Service, a.k.a. MI-6, has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets.

Alfredson and his production team (including his Let the Right One In director of photography, Hoyte Van Hoytema) appear to have done an excellent job of filming said cast, shrouding them in shadows and recreating 1970s-era Britain as a desolate and bleak world. Those gloomy visuals appear to only enhance the air of mystery and suspicion that has lingered throughout the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy clips released so far.

The original novel by le Carré is truly an old-fashioned cloak-and-dagger tale - where agents are reliant on their wits and cunning to stay one step ahead of both their known (and secret) enemies. Moviegoers who prefer their spy flicks to be packed full with action and deft-defying set pieces (nothing wrong with that, of course) may find Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy less interesting. Nonetheless, this looks like a very engaging and attention-holding piece of cinema for those who enjoy a good slow-burn thriller.

Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy teaser trailer

Oldman leads a cast of consistently great actors in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - including Oscar-winner Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Tom Hardy (Warrior), Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement), Toby Jones (Captain America), John Hurt (Alien), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), David Dencik (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), and Ciarán Hinds (The Debt). That cast alone is promising enough to make this a must-see film, even for those who're holding off on watching any footage released in advance.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is now slated for theatrical release in the U.S. on December 9th, 2011.
