It appears that Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov's next directorial effort may be the mysteriously titled film, Red Asphalt. Described by insiders as "an edgy 3D thriller," the screenplay for this project was written by Andrew Baldwin, a writer whose sole claim to fame is that his script The West Is Dead was listed on a Hollywood insider's list of the best unproduced scripts of 2008 (i.e. The Black List).
While it was generally assumed that Bekmambetov's next move would be to direct Wanted 2, the followup to his hit 2008 action flick, that project has been stalled for several months now. After Wanted comic book writer Mark Millar's recent announcement that Wanted 2 is moving on without Angelina Jolie it looked as though the sequel would begin pre-production sooner than expected. Unfortunately, this new announcement about Bekmambetov indicates that Wanted 2 may not be moving forward in the near future.
Of course, Red Asphalt and Wanted 2 aren't the only projects that Bekmambetov is rumored to be directing next. Just a few weeks ago we reported that Bekmambetov is set to produce and direct The Last Witch Hunter for Summit Entertainment. He will also be producing the sci-fi invasion flick The Darkest Hour and the upcoming supernatural adventure Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter over the next year as well.
For those hoping that Wanted 2 will begin pre-production soon, we'll keep you updated on any new developments in its struggle to make it to the big screen. Until Bekmambetov actually confirms which of these many rumored films is in fact his next project, consider the action sequel on hold for the time being.
What do you folks thinks? Do you want to see Bekmambetov take on Wanted 2 next? Or would you prefer he take on something original like Red Asphalt?
No news yet on when Red Asphalt might begin production or when it will be released but we'll keep you posted on any new information as it leaks out.
