Timothée Chalamet has been one of the most prolific actors of 2021, starring in 3 hugely successful films (critically and commercially) as well as landing some of the most sought after upcoming roles in the industry (including young Wonka in the upcoming Willy Wonka reboot and the lead role of Paul Atreides in the Dune sequel).
Despite a few of his films releasing during the pandemic (as well as having limited theatrical releases) Chalamet is best known for his box office draw and incredible range. The King (2019) - $126,931
The King is a historical drama about King Henry V taking over the throne from his tyrannical father, the politics that surrounded the young king, and the successful battles that made him a more liked and successful ruler. The movie stars Chalamet in the titular role of King Henry V (as well as Robert Pattinson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Joel Edgerton).
Since The King had a limited theatrical release before it premiered on the streaming site, Netflix, it's not at all surprising that it has low box office numbers. However, that doesn't mean fans didn't enjoy the movie as many loved seeing Pattinson and Chalamet square off and the character development.
Don't Look Up (2021) - $784,681
Don't Look Up is one of the newest (and most controversial) movies, as the impactful social justice film has had fans talking since its release last Christmas. The movie follows two world-class scientists trying to convince the U.S. Government that the giant meteor they just discovered is going to destroy the planet if immediate action isn't taken.
Although Chalamet has more of a comedic role, the tone of the movie is a lot more serious as it asks the audience to look at society's current relationship with media and climate change. Don't Look Up is also a Netflix film that broke records on the streaming site, but received a limited theatrical release (possibly explaining why its figures aren't as high as the other movies).
Beautiful Boy (2018) - $16.6 Million
Beautiful Boy is a coming-of-age drama that is based on a true story and tells the story of Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) and his struggle with coping and overcoming his battle with addiction. Beautiful Boy also features an incredible performance by Steve Carell, as Nic's dad who's trying his absolute best to help his son.
The movie is simultaneously beautiful and heartbreaking as fans loved seeing the dynamics between the two incredible actors play out on screen. The movie also received a wider theatrical release than both The King and Don't Look Up before finding its way to the streaming platform.
A Rainy Day In New York (2019) - $22 Million
A Rainy Day In New York starred is a comedy romance about a young couple (played by Chalamet and Elle Fanning) arriving in New York for the weekend and being greeted with horrible weather and a series of misadventures. It also starred Selena Gomez, Liev Schreiber, and Jude Law.
The film is one of Chalamet's lesser-known works as it didn't receive a huge advertising campaign at the time of its release due to a series of delays.
Call Me By Your Name (2017) - $41.9 Million
Call Me By Your Name is a romantic drama set in Italy in the '80s about a 17-year-old boy who quickly falls in love with an older research assistant that is visiting his family for the summer. Initially a small indie film, it ended up performing a lot better than anticipated at the box office, with the movie breaking the record for the 2017's "Highest Per Theater Average Opener" (via Deadline).
Although there was much controversy surrounding the movie's plot, Chalamet also ended up receiving an Oscar nomination for "Best Actor in a Leading Role" too.
The French Dispatch (2021) - $45.6 Million
The French Dispatch is Wes Anderson's newest creation, described as a love letter to journalism. The film is set in a fictional 20th-century French city and brings to life multiple stories that are to be published in a magazine by journalists in the film.
Chalamet played Zeffirelli, a revolutionary student who managed to capture the audience with his carefree and thought-provoking nature. However, despite being widely loved by Anderson fans, the film didn't receive a single Academy Award nomination.
Lady Bird (2017) - $78.97 Million
Lady Bird is a coming-of-age dramatic comedy about an artistically inclined 17-year-old, who is growing up in Sacramento California in the early 2000s. The film is Greta Gerwig's directorial debut and features incredible performances from Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, and Laurie Metcalf.
Fans absolutely loved the chemistry between Ronan and Chalamet (as well as the incredible direction by Gerwig, who have all gone on to collaborate again with Little Women). This isn't one of Chalamet's largest roles, but it is a movie he is well known for among fans and the film did much better than originally anticipated at the box office.
Little Women (2019) - $216.6 Million
Little Women is Greta Gerwig's dramatic adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's legendary novel of the same name. The story follows Jo March as she reflects back on her life and tells the story of the March sisters and her family. The movie is about young women coming to terms with the lives they live (and the restrictions put on them by society).
Fans were eager to see the newest iteration of the March sister's story, especially considering it was being helmed by Gerwig, and the anticipation directly translated to a great performance at the box office. They also loved watching the relationship between Chalamet's Laurie and Florence Pugh's Amy as they were seen exceptional chemisty
Dune (2021) - $691.6 Million
Dune is Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel of the same name. Dune is an action-packed sci-fi film about the son of a noble family taking control and protecting one of the most vital elements in the world. Dune is really a massive story, and the source material for a lot of modern-day classics in the sci-fi world.
The film has an incredible cast featuring Chalamet in the titular role as well as Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Josh Brolin. After the huge success of Villeneuve's Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049, fans were extremely excited to see what the filmmaker had up his sleeve for the adaptation. Dune was released simultaneously on HBO Max and ended up being a huge box office success.
Interstellar (2014) - $701.7 Million
Interstellar is Christopher Nolan's sci-fi adventure about a group of scientists that travel through a wormhole in space in order to help humanity survive on an apocalyptic earth. Interstellar is a truly epic action film in a way only Christopher Nolan could pull off. The film features incredible performances from Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain.
Although it was one of Chalamet's smallest parts, it's the largest grossing film the actor has ever been involved with. It's also worst noting that Chalamet still found a way to make his presence felt on screen.
