Timeless Season 2 Gets An Official Premiere Date From NBC

Timeless Season 1

NBC set a premiere date for Timeless season 2. In the Fall 2016 TV season, NBC debuted the freshman time travel drama that mixed history and science fiction, as a small crew manned a time machine and used it to track a terrorist through the past and present. Created by Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), Timeless follows history professor Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer), Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter), and programmer Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett) as they venture through history on the hunt for ex-NSA asset Garcia Flynn (Goran Višnjić).

Timeless wasn't a ratings powerhouse for NBC, averaging a 2.1 rating in adults age 18-49 and eight million viewers overall in L+7 ratings in its first season. As a result, Timeless was cancelled by NBC last spring. However, the show did inspire a vocal and dedicated fan following with its 16-episode debut season, and those fans called for NBC to overturn their decision - or for the show's creators to find a new home where the series could continue. In response to this outcry, NBC un-cancelled Timeless and renewed it for season 2, though it would be delayed until Spring 2018. Now we know exactly when the time travel drama will return.

NBC announced on the official Timeless Twitter that season 2 will premiere on Sunday March 11th at 10pm ET. Per Deadline, the show will debut following the three-hour premiere of NBC's annual American Ninja Warrior: USA Vs. the World special, and will continue in the same time slot for the remainder of its second season.

Timeless - Wyatt, Rufus and Lucy stranded

The 10pm time slot for Timeless season 2 is unexpected considering Kripke reportedly pitched a family-friendly slant to the series for its return with the expectation of airing in a prime 8pm time slot. In comparison, season 1 of Timeless aired at 10pm on Mondays following NBC's The Voice. It's unclear if season 2 will be the family-friendly angle Kripke pitched or if the network told showrunners to stay their course. Either way, Timeless season 2 will be shorter than its freshman season, since NBC ordered only 10 episodes.

Season 1 of Timeless saw Lucy, Wyatt, and Rufus finally capture the time terrorist Flynn, but along the way they had discovered the mysterious and insidious organization known as Rittenhouse that could be found throughout the entire history of the United States. Since season 2 of Timeless started filming in late 2017, it won't be long now until fans will get a chance to see how the Lifeboat crew deal with Rittenhouse, and especially with the revelations of the season 1 finale. Fans may be in for a shorter season, but they can take heart that NBC listened to their outcry and brought Timeless back - or, perhaps we can thank the Time Team for going back and "fixing" history.
