HBO's The Time Traveler's Wife is ending after one season. The six-part series follows the intricate yet complicated love story between Clare (Rose Leslie) and Henry (Theo James) whose marriage faces a big problem: time travel. Based on the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger, the romance/fantasy was written and produced by Doctor Who and Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat.

Deadline reported today that The Time Traveler's Wife will not be returning for a second season. The news may surprise fans considering the finale was advertised as the season finale. Read on to see what HBO had to say about the show coming to a close:

"Though HBO will not be moving forward with a second season of The Time Traveler’s Wife, it was our privilege to partner with master storytellers Steven Moffat and David Nutter...We are so grateful for their passion, hard work and care for adapting this beloved book. We also thank Theo and Rose, and the rest of our brilliant cast for their heartfelt performances, which completely captivated audiences."

Although it was unclear whether The Time Traveler's Wife would be a limited series, the first season seemed to set up the need for a second. The season finale only ended about halfway through Clare and Henry's story: on their wedding day. The finale even referenced their future together, pointing to their stessful attempts to have children, and showing Henry talking on the phone to what the audience can assume is the character from the book, Dr. David Kendrick, a scientist that helps Henry's condition. It looks like viewers will never have a chance to meet him, or the daughter Clare and Henry eventually have together, Alba.

Despite staying faithful to the book for the most part, the decision to end the show after just one season ruins any chances to continue Clare and Henry's story the way it was in the novel. This is bound to disappoint fans considering it was highly rated among audiences. However, it appears raving reviews from fans weren't enough to save The Time Traveler's Wife, as season 2 is no longer a possibility.
