TikTok has rolled out a new font, and, unsurprisingly, a lot of users aren’t into it — but can the change be undone? Much of TikTok’s appeal is that it offers a highly personalized experience with features like its For You page, showing users exactly the types of content they want to see based on their activity across the platform. But when it comes to the presentation of the app itself, users have little control, and even changes that would seem minor can feel jarring to longtime TikTokers.

It seems TikTok has been rolling out the new font gradually, arriving to users in waves over the course of spring 2023. Previously, the app long used a font thought to be ‘Proxima Nova – Semibold’. Now, some TikTok users are venting their shock and distaste online after opening the app to discover a different font than they’re used to, with taller, slightly larger letters. The change appears to affect all areas of the app, from comments to video captions and feed titles. Unfortunately for those hoping to revert to the classic font, there’s currently no way to change the setting within the TikTok app.

Will Changing Your System Font Fix It?

Crafty TikTokers who enjoy tinkering with the system settings on their smartphones may be wondering if there’s a fix that can be applied outside the app. Android devices allow users to easily change a phone’s main font to another option of their choice just by going to ‘Settings’ > ‘Display’ > ‘Font size and style.’ From there, users can tap ‘Font style’ and choose from the available fonts or select the option to download a new one to use. On iPhone, it’s a bit more complicated, typically requiring the user to jailbreak the phone.

Before going through all the effort, TikTok users should know that changing the system-wide font won’t affect how text appears on TikTok. Either way, they’ll still be stuck with TikTok’s new font. As with most changes like this, it’s likely to be a short-lived annoyance anyway as users become accustomed to it while using the app normally. There are plenty of TikTokers who aren’t bothered by the change, too. Some have chimed into the debates online to say it’s so minor that they didn’t even notice until it was pointed out.

TikTok has been making a lot of changes lately, and there’s much on the app to be distracted by otherwise. The platform recently expanded its new Creativity Program Beta, giving creators a new option for monetizing their content. And back in March (for Pi Day), TikTok introduced a dedicated STEM feed to promote science, technology, engineering, and math-related content.
