A few days ago the principal cast was announced for Paul W.S. Anderson’s 3D version of The Three Musketeers. Amongst the confirmed cast was Ray Stevenson (Rome, Thor), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Matthew Macfadyen (Robin Hood) as the Musketeers Porthos, Athos and Aramis, respectively.

Also announced were Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Cardinal Richelieu, Madds Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Rochefort, and Milla Jovovich as Milady de Winter, with Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) attached to play D’Artagnan.

Announcing so much of the cast so suddenly suggested that Anderson and Co. are hurrying to get the Musketeers into production ASAP. And today comes news which confirms that suspicion.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment (the studio behind the wildly successful Twilight Saga) has already picked up the U.S. distribution rights to The Three Musketeers. The studio is eying a summer 2011 release date, which means productions needs to start right away.

Anderson has therefore brought the start of principal photography forward a month to August this year, in order to get his version of The Three Musketeers in theaters before another Musketeers movie, which recently snagged director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity). That version is scheduled to begin shooting this Fall, but it looks like Anderson’s will have a head start. Constantin Films exec Martin Moskowicz commented with the following:

“We recognize the blockbuster potential of ‘The Three Musketeers,’ so summer 2011 is the ideal window… It means we have to start filming a month earlier than planned, but we are ready to shoot.”

Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary) and Alex Litvak (Predators) have written the screenplay for this 3D Musketeers. It’s being produced by Anderson, along with his Impact Films partner Jeremy Bolt and Robert Kulzer of Constantin Films.

Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers is a hot property in Hollywood.

We haven’t had a film adaptation of The Three Musketeers for quite a long time but suddenly there’s this burst of interest in it. Although I’m of the opinion that Anderson isn’t the best suited to direct this 3D version – as he’s mostly known for silly action movies like Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator – I am looking forward to this more than the Warner Bros. Musketeers film.

Which of the two Three Musketeers movies are you looking forward to most?

The Three Musketeers in 3D begins shooting this August for a release sometime in summer, 2011.
