Cast Announced for 3D 'Three Musketeers' Movie

The Three Musketeers cast - Logan Lerman, Christopher Waltz and more

For whatever reason the classic Alexandre Dumas tale, The Three Musketeers, has become a hot commodity in Hollywood as of late. There are already three separate movies in the works: one which recently snagged Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), one we heard of a while back and haven't heard much of since, and finally, one to be directed in 3D by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Aliens vs. Predator).

Today it's been announced who will fill out the main cast of Anderson's 3D Musketeers, including an actor who I'm particularly stoked about.

Heat Vision Blog reports that Logan Lerman - who recently starred as Percy Jackson and was rumored to be the new Spider-Man - is in negotiations to play D'Artagnan, "a young man who leaves home to become a member of the fighting force of the French king’s royal household."

Playing the The Three Musketeers themselves will be: Ray Stevenson (Rome, Thor) will play Porthos, Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) will play Athos, and Matthew Macfadyen (Robin Hood) will play Aramis. On the villainous side of the fence, Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds - he's the one I'm excited about, FYI) will portray Cardinal Richelieu and Madds Mikelsen (Casino Royale) will play Rochefort.

Unsurprisingly (some would say) Anderson's wife, Milla Jovovich, has been cast in the role of Milady de Winter, a former lover of Evans' Athos who's described as a "17th Century Bond girl." I'd like to see exactly what that entails... It's also noted that an offer has been put out to Orlando Bloom to play another villain, the Duke of Buckingham.

Wow, that's a lot of cast members. Usually casting is a slow process but it appears that the studio wants to hurry things up with its version of The Three Musketeers before the other two get made.

I'm kind of torn on this particular Three Musketeers telling: On the one hand I like the direction Anderson (who has co-written the script) is going for - "a contemporary feel without losing the the period setting." And the announced cast is quite impressive indeed.

However, I really don't like that this is yet another movie to jump on the 3D bandwagon. For movies like Avatar,3D is part of the experience, but can you really see a logical reason for a Three Musketeers movie to be in 3D? Really?

What do you make of the cast acquired for this particular version of The Three Musketeers? Are you annoyed it will be in 3D?

The Three Musketeers is set to start shooting this September with a release date TBA.
