Things seemed to be going just fine for Thor when his latest comic began, rebuilding his people's home as the new King of Asgard. But as his famous hammer Mjolnir was growing heavier in his hand, Thor feared his days might be numbered. And now Marvel has confirmed that terrible thought, hinting at the other Marvel superheroes who might claim the hammer... once King Thor is deemed unworthy.

These kernels of doubt were introduced back in Thor #1, even before Galactus made Thor his new Herald. Technically Thor is still rebounding from the previous time he was unable to lift Mjolnir -- the hammer calling out to Jane Foster, the Mighty Thor, instead. But after proving himself through the epic War of the Realms event, a new Mjolnir was created for Thor to claim once more. It was that hammer that helped him end the conflict and return the Realms to peace. But it seems his role as 'God of the Unworthy' is about to become a lot more literal.

There may be more to the changing nature of Mjolnir than fans yet realize. Sure, Loki noticed Mjolnir was getting heavier when Thor went to raise it in his kingly debut. But Thor met that suggestion by showing his new mastery of the hammer's momentum, suggesting Thor was still worthy. In the latest issue, Lady Sif stealing Mjolnir out of Thor's hand was merely a brief disarming, as Mjolnir soon returned when called (not before Loki proved himself worthy by lifting it). But as Thor has embraced the impending doom facing the universe, and is doing more and more extreme things to help Galactus grow strong enough to stop it, lines are being crossed by the day. So many, in fact, that Mjolnir itself is going to take notice. At least, that's the most logical explanation for the developments of Thor #7, revealed as part of DC's June solicitations. Take a look at the official cover art and plot synopsis for yourselves:

Thor Losing Mjolnir in Marvel Comics

  • SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MJOLNIR... And this is a poor time for the All-Father of Asgard to lose his primary weapon. The Golden City is in chaos after Galactus’ ill-timed visit, and there are new threats on the horizon. Thor needs his hammer now more than ever…and yet the Uru grows heavier with every passing day. What will it take for the God of Thunder to hang on to one of the most powerful weapons in the Multiverse?

We'll leave it to the fans to decide if the hands of Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Groot, Ant-Man, or any other will find the hammer rising to serve them. But with the plot description suggesting Thor might cross yet another line to prevent it, all we know for sure is that Mjolnir doesn't gain weight for no reason. Best check yourself, 'Herald of Thunder.'

Thor #7 will arrive in your local comic book shop in June 2020.
