Gorr the God Butcher is one of the most powerful, violent villains that Thor has ever faced. In order to defeat him in the comics, the God of Thunder had to get creative, having to use two different versions of Mjolnir to take down Gorr for good before he killed every deity in existence.

Created by Jason Aaron and Esab Ribic, Gorr the God Butcher first appeared in Thor: God of Thunder #2. After the death of his family, Gorr made it his own quest to kill every God, after his prayers to save them failed. Armed with the powers of All-Black the Necrosword (via the King in Black), Gorr represented one of the most dangerous adversaries Thor has ever faced. Christian Bale will be playing Gorr the God Butcher in the upcoming Taika Watiti-directed Thor: Love and Thunder. In the comics, in order to kill him, Thor needed not one, but two Mjolnir's.

In the finale of Thor: God of Thunder, Gorr detonates a Godbomb, a bomb so powerful that it would kill every god in existence in both the past, present, and future. However, in order to stop the bomb from wiping all gods from existence, Thor teamed-up with different versions of himself from different timelines. After the bomb explodes, Thor uses two Mjolnir's to absorb the Godbomb and the powers of the Necrosword. With the power of the bomb inside him and taking over his body, Thor uses his hammer's to send a devastating strike at Gorr. As he lays bloodied and defeated, young Thor cuts off his head.

Gorr The Godbutcher Thor

Absorbing the All-Black and Godbomb proved to be costly for the main version of Thor, as after defeating Gorr, the hammer-wielding hero falls to his knees as black ooze leaks from his mouth and eyes. He tells his fellow Thor's that it's "too late," to save him and that they need to "just make certain that you prove him wrong." It would be the ninth time Thor died - although he would rise again days later.

Gorr the God Butcher proved in just a handful of issues that he's one of the deadliest foes Thor has ever faced. If it wasn't for Thor's sacrifice via the two versions of Mjolnir, Gorr would have successfully wiped every single god from existence. Thankfully, Thor gave up his life to ensure Gorr's plan would fail. It will be interesting to see if Christian Bale's version of Gorr the God Butcher will be as deadly as he was in the comics and whether Thor will need multiple Mjolnir's to defeat him.
