Did your heart skip a beat for a second? Well don’t be silly: Kenneth Branagh’s big-screen adaptation of Thor just started shooting, so a trailer for the film is still a long ways off.
What we do have for you today, however, is a new trailer for Marvel’s upcoming animated feature, Thor: Tales of Asgard. So if you noobs want a good study guide to get you ready for when the god of thunder crashes into theaters, here’s your crib sheet.
Tales of Asgard is kind of like a prequel to the Thor universe we will see in the movie. In this animated feature, Thor and his (half?) brother, Loki, go against their father Odin’s wishes and set off on a quest across their mystical realm, Asgard, to find a magic sword. However, freeing the sword brings about consequences that put Asgard at risk, while helping to send Thor and Loki down their conflicting paths toward destiny.
Here is the trailer for Thor: Tales of Asgard, which was included on the Planet Hulk DVD/Blu-ray:
The only issue I have here is that Marvel is waiting until 2011 to premiere this animated feature. I get why they’re doing it: by next year, after a few images and then a trailer or two have dropped, Thor mania will be in full swing. The average person who knows nothing about “That cool-looking Marvel Comics Viking movie,” will be out there scrambling for anything that can put them onto what Thor is all about (might I suggest Screen Rant? ;-) ) and a nice, timely, animated feature will help them get up to speed on the Asgardian universe.
However, I have two arguments against this train of logic:
- Tales of Asgard and all this young Thor stuff isn’t the most kick-ass way to introduce the character to a wider audience.
- For the many, many, people who have loved Thor long time, this 2011 release date is just a pain in the you-know-what. We’ve already been waiting on the movie…
Eh, what are you going to do? Let us know what you thought about the trailer for Thor: Tales of Asgard.
